Ireland Rejects EU Treaty

The confederate states of Europe just keeps running into trouble. Seems like they did not take away enough people's right to vote. I am sure they will regroup, come up with an even less democratic plan, and get it right next time.

Ireland rejects EU reform treaty
Campaigners for the No vote
The Irish No campaign was a broad-ranging coalition

Voters in Ireland have rejected the European Union's Lisbon reform treaty in a referendum by 53.4% to 46.6%.

The vote is a major blow to leaders in the 27-nation EU, which requires all its members to ratify the treaty. Only Ireland has held a public vote. . .

Hey you know if Ireland doesnt what to join the EU than you have to respect that, if you know you respect Democracy in any way shape or form.

I think the EU was a good idea but I hope it doesnt go to far. Perhaps it already has.

Ireland is already in the EU. They did, however, reject the Lisbon Treaty.

The only country to have a democratic vote on it? Why does the PM seem embarrassed and ashamed of the will of his people?

If more people were allowed to vote, i have a feeling that the people's votes would be much of the same. The establishment elites way of thinking that is constantly shoved down everyone's throat is quite a different thing from how a lot of people feel there i think.

Apparently it was a similar problem to the Nice Treaty of a few years ago, except that time they re-ran the whole thing as they were so embarrassed at the no vote which they got the first time, and they got a yes the second. Hopefully that doesn't happen here, that did the government's credibility a lot of damage at the time.

Dunno how this will effect the EU to be honest. My Mam told me on the phone that for the last month at home there have been lots and lots of rows on tv between pro and anti politicians about it, the pro saying its what we owe the EU for helping us out of the depression and getting us going, the anti saying it effectively signs us over to the EU and that we've already given over a lot of our control with regards banking and so on.

I dunno, tough.

It was a great day for Europe and a great day for Ireland. I am delighted as a proud Irishman and democrat. The people have spoken.

Because people are stupid idiots

It's as simple as that.

Yes the taoiseach and all the major party leaders are disgusted- our poloticians have become very arogant- they are saying that the campaign was hijacked by the far left and far right- Bullshit- are they saying that over half the eloctorate are far left and right

The major players in Europe and Ireland are shocked- Europe are saying we are ungrateful yet the Dutch and the French people have the opinions as the Irish- their parliment pushed it through anyway

I voted No for a wide range of issues but mainly because of how this important piece of legislation has been described to the people- very hard to follow and no clarity- i will give you an example from literature that came in the door

"#12-the state may exercise the options or discretions provided byor undr articles 1.22,2.64,2.65,2.66,2.67,2.68 and 2.278 of the treaty refered to in subsection 10 of this section and articles 1.18 and 1.20 of protocol treaty 1 annexed to that treaty, but any such exercise shall be subject to the prior approval of both houses of the oireachtais."

Its all like that- very confusing stuff to the average person

I have no problem with being part of Europe in a simple economic treaty but idealogicaly and politicly i do not want to be part of it- I feel that the big players of Europe do not have the same needs or interests that i have in life so i dont want them making decisions for me- they are not working class, they are wealtgy elitists that will shape Europe into benefiting themselves first and foremost above everyone else

In ireland we fought for centuries to get independence from foreign rule- we drew up a fantastic constistution and then 70 or so years later our poloticians want us to throw away that constitution and use the European one- Great men fought and died so that Ireland could decide its own fate, many hererespect that
