this is a center right country. Marriage is not a private matter. It is a public matter because it is when society comes together to recognize a new family being created. Society does not recognize gays to count as really families. That is it. They can call it what they want but it is not a marriage.

i think it's the applying the term "marriage" to a homosexual couple that un-nerves people. people wanna keep the traditional definition of a marriage in tact. if they want to have a civil union, i don't care, but don't call it a marriage

The government does not have the authority to religiously marry people, but they do have the authority to grant civil contracts between individuals. I don't think homosexuals should be discriminated against in terms of the legal right to enter a civil contract with each other, but I also don't think that the state has the right to force any religious organization to recognize certain types of unions.
