It is amazing. The freakin' police have paparrazi now. We're gonna need a new name for police paparrazi, the "poporrazi". Fully charged cell phone cameras, with a lawyer on speed dial, and their laptop in the car to instantly jump on YouTube as soon as they "got something".
Awesome.

My city doesn't have a law against it.

But, I can "secure the area" as much as I want. And these dumb college kids around here seem to have an ample supply of cell phone cameras on hand everywhere they go "just in case". They will film a cop when nothing is going wrong "just in case" something goes bad and they can sell it and put it on YouTube. So, the cop can call for backup to "secure the area". If they refuse to leave the prescribed perimeter distance, then they get the silver bracelets.

I do have some empathy for you there, that would be extremely annoying.

It is the combination of a lot of things.

For one, it is the current generation's lack of respect for ANY authority, not just cops. It is likely because their parents didn't raise them. They bought them Nintendos, gave them a room and cohabitated with them rather than raising them. They never had a positive authority figure.

So, they don't respect cops, teachers, politicians (I'm with them on that one usually), military lifestyle, or any other authority figure. Just look how the pro athletes behave now. Their coaches- football aside- can't control their teams at all. And even the disciplinarian football coaches are having trouble. And any time they can find something they think makes the authority figure look hypocritical, they pounce and blow it out of proportion.

Next, you have the sensationalism of the media. They find 1 out of 100,000 police in-car videos showing something, and they splash it on TV/internet. Then they dig up another out of thousands, etc, until eventually the have the general public thinking all or most cops behave like that.

Next, you have the money factor. Everyone wants an easy lawsuit over something, and a government that employs a cop is a cash cow. So, they film everything they can hoping for a quick buck from a lawsuit or selling the video.

And finally, the feeling of self-importance. Many in this generation coming through their 20's now have a false sense of their level of importance in the world. They think they all can save the world by themselves by saving the planet by changing a lightbulb, and they think they can "break the system" by using a camera phone to film a cop.

All these combined gets us people like the douche bag in the video.

I remembered hearing something like that as well. Recording video+audio would be considered eavesdropping but video only is ok. Maybe state laws differ as well.

if cops do their job right, they have nothing to worry about if filmed. end of story.

cops bitching about people lacking respect for authority is pathetic. most cops get off on what little authority is paid their way, its why they took the fucking job to begin with.

Depends what you mean by "right". The law's definition of right and the definition or right shared by most 20's age Americans these days are far different.

A cop can do what is legally right, and still get dragged into civil court. Some departments won't back him and his legal fees are on his wallet.

Plus, have you ever had a bad day at work? Of course. Ever made a mistake at work, or lost your temper and said something you wish you didn't? Of course, everyone has days like that at work. Except when most people have a bad day, there isn't a tree hugging college genius with a camera phone hiding around the corner waiting to catch something. The problem is these hippies of today will not accept a cop having a bad day. They want absolute perfection, every day, every hour, every minute from every cop. It is simply impossible to meet that standard. And these YouTube-babies know it, and they get off on catching a bad day on tape.

But, these tapes almost NEVER result in any disciplinary action, so whatever

Oh, and we aren't the only ones who say this generation lacks respect for authority. Teachers are saying it, so are parents, so are politicians, so are military drill instructors, so are sports coaches, so are religious leaders, so are business managers........well, you get the point. It isn't a suprise this generation wants a Democrat to win and allow the government to nanny them through their entire life of lack of personal responsibility.
