Former Army captain Rips NYT on Killer Vet Spread

http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/0...-rips-nyt.html

Phil Carter is, in general, a pretty even-tempered guy. But yesterday's New York Times spread -- on the 121 killings allegedly committed by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans -- has got Phil fuming.

Quote:
So, basically, the reporters went trolling on Lexis-Nexis and other databases to find "murder" within the same paragraph as "veteran" or "soldier," and built a front-page story around that research. They compared the pre-war numbers to the post-war numbers and found that, voila!, there's a difference. And then it looks like they cherry-picked the best anecdotes out of that research (including the ones where they could get interviews and photos) to craft a narrative which fit the data.

The article makes no attempt to produce a statistically valid comparison of homicide rates among vets to rates among the general population. Nor does it rely at all on Pentagon data about post-deployment incidents of violence among veterans. It basically just generalizes from this small sample (121 out of 1.7 million Iraq and Afghanistan vets, not including civilians and contractors) to conclude that today's generation of veterans are coming home full of rage and ready to kill.
I've got a one-word verdict on this article and its research: bullshit.
Phil is a former Army captain, and served a year in Iraq. I'm curious what other veterans think of this piece. Did it hit the same chord for you?

The NYT - just like every other media outlet in the world - is not above hit pieces. This seems to be a politically of profit motivated article, and does not belong in a respectable, objective newspaper.

Let's take a closer look at this issue:

121 homicides over 6 years by 1.7 million people is a murder rate of ~1.19 murders/100,000/yr. The national murder rate last year in the US was 5.6 murders/100,000.

Perhaps a more accurate way of comparing data would be to point out that over virtually the same 6 year time period here at home, the US population has increased by about 13,600,000 people, and there has been an increase in murders/yr of about 1000 homicides (16,035 in 2001, 17,034 in 2006). This breaks down to a rate of 1.23 murders/100,000/yr over the last 6 years, which is still greater than the military veteran average of 1.19 murders/100,000/yr over 6 years.

Basically, no matter how you slice it and despite the well-documented high incidence of PTSD, the Iraq vets are committing less homicides that the rest of the population as a whole. This fact really belongs in such an article, and most likely was deliberately omitted in order to increase the political impact and profit margins of the paper. The NYT may preach journalistic ethics and objectivity, but they seem to be more interested in sensationalizing a story to make a buck and push a political agenda than they are with upholding these professional principles.

The only worthy point that one can take from this article might be that we need to ensure that guys returning from the desert get the mental health support that they need. Of course it doesn't sound like that was their purpose.

Wow. I'd like to see some more on this. If their methodology was as flawed as you say, it's truly nauseating that the NYT would permit the printing of such an article.

The NYT, despite all the criticism, puts out some good stuff. Unfortunately, some crap gets put out too.
