Exactly what I thought. There'd be no way to trace it back to where it was sold/who bought it.

You've got a better chance of lifting a finger print off the brass.

as far as i know, there isn't a really good reason for this, and the reason is that thumbprints are NOT a good screening tool. i know everyone learns that thumbprints are like snowflakes, but IRL even a search of a full set of prints will return a number of matches, and that's usually just a database of prior offenders.
what would it accomplish to create a new pool of de facto suspects? criminals generally do not obtain their weapons legally much less through actual gun stores.

This is a foolish thing to do. You can limit a law abiding society all you want but it means shit to criminals.

Yes and the finger print measure takes the extra step from where it was sold to who it was sold to.
You're still free to have a gun, this is just an extra step in making sure those responsible for illegally using the guns have a better chance of being caught.
And please on the "made to feel like a criminal" part. If you don't plan on partaking in any criminal activities, why would it make you feel like a criminal? If anything it should make you feel safer from criminals. Finger prints and a means of identification, not an attempt at degrading a person into feeling like a criminal.

As if there wasn't already an ammo shortage - here comes a full-on hoarding panic that will have international implications.

a great example of this is when the nazi's used french government records of homosexuals, jews, etc. to persecute them after they took power. bottom line is, if the information isn't important, don't keep records. that's intrusive government.

Jesus Christ... IT IS ABOUT TRACING CRIMES BACK TO CRIMINALS.
You all agree that driver's licenses, driver's plates, VINs and the like are good ideas. Well, why not for deadly weapons??
REGULATE GUNS STRICTLY. It will only lead to less gun crimes. If bullets are harder to come by, there will be less bullet related crimes. Some of you people have the foresight of a 3 year old...

What if the person policies his/her brass? This will not reduce the murder or crime rate one bit.
I see it as a way of finding out who's got ammo so that when it comes time to issue marshal law they know exactly where to go. What if the government declares everybody who owns a firearm is a criminal?
Again you need to read what the purpose of the 2nd admin is for. It's sole use is to keep the gov in check.

Those aren't rights, those are privledges. You might want to try reading the 2nd Amendment, it's in that thing called the Bill of Rights.
