Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...

The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocks” and claimed they're already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don't pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network.

This is not the first time an internet provider infringes upon net neutrality, but it is the first time that an ISP so brutally states that they simply plan to limit internet access to a television-like system in which the access provider completely regulates the content you have access to.

Virgin Media has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and the real danger is that when they start applying this system to their network, all major internet providers around the globe will soon follow the trend. Because this is exactly what major ISP's have been wanting to do for years.

But we can stop it.

If the masses of the internet react against this, we will set an example of what happens when one provider tries to take away our freedom. We will make it very clear that any ISP who tries to infringe upon net neutrality will see its popularity go down the drain because the users don't accept it. And we'll see to it that only the providers who care about safeguarding our internet freedom have our support.

Speak out in any way you can and spread the word.

Ok. But who the hell uses Virgin as an ISP?

You have to admit, thought, if you got rid of all the virgins that post on Sherdog, the place would be drastically improved.

So in a way I would support keeping virgins from ruining the internet.

"speaking out" against unfairness is a pretty general, if not a hollow, suggestion. how about places to support a NN lobby or a voting chart or something else useful.

I'm really surprised the net isn't more "policed" yet.

You've already got ISP's though that are delving into heavy packet-shaping so they can slow speeds to a crawl for specific aspects of the web like bit-torrent.

After all, the high speed providers pretty much have a monopoly, at least in the states. If I want anything better than dial-up, my choices are pretty limited, so I'm at their mercy. They can throw down a lot of shit terms on the contracts and say "where else are you gonna go?"

i'm not an engineer type, but i remember hearing a while back that some crazy percentage like 80% of all internet traffic was file sharing/bit torrent transactions. given some of the controversy over piracy (not to get on a tangent regarding fairness - just pointing out that its an issue) i can imagine many ISPs being incentivized to limit that sort of activity.

You can thank the carriers for this as well, I maintain a circuit that is 250mbits. Each mbit utilized costs $30.00. This is our cost, we have to recoup - as you can imagine several cable modems downloading content = big dollars. People have a skewed idea of the cost of bandwidth due to cable|fios carriers offering 7+ mbit downloads for chump change per month.

I think Comcast is already doing something like this in the US.

I seriously doubt that the internet will be controlled. The time for the government and the corporations to do it was decades ago back when it was small and not as popular.
