College kids are more valuable citizens than our Soldiers...
according to our government and the media. President Bush ordered that flags be flown at half staff for the 32 victims of the VT massacre. Every single news network showed the VT gunmans homemade video. They showed the victims on tv and gave out the names even with a little background information.
I ask the question...why aren't flags flown at half staff for our soldiers who die fighting for this country? Why are their faces not put on the television after the families are notified? Why is the media forbidden from covering the flag draped coffins as they are recieved here in the states?
Well for the media, I understand. I mean they have to compete in ratings and lets face it...most of the country is just down right BORED with Iraq and the War on Terrorism. So they did their duty and did exactly what the pathetic little shit from VT wanted...they made plenty of time to show his gay little video and made him a criminal legend. Well done ass-holes.
Our country has been reduced to a group of people who are so desperate to be entertained that we can't bare to remember the people who sacrifice everything for that luxury. We can't keep the flags at half staff until this conflict is over because that rolling around our conscience would make people upset and it might lead to the question, when is this going to be over?
The only conclusion I have come up with is that either dead college kids lives mean more to society than that of a dead soldier or perhaps they don't want the masses to be reminded that soldiers are dying daily. I hate to be such a cynic so I will go with the latter.
9 US air-borne rangers were blown up yesterday. I hope that gets gets some mention, at least in the ticker....after we get to see the new fresh uncut remix version of the VT killers video of course and then two political hacks vomiting everything they 'sort-of' know about gun control.

I've just heard today that 3,300 US soldiers died as a result of the invasion of Iraq.
And they died for made up weapons which didn't exist.
How come people aren't fucking furious about this? Really.

Thousands of people die everyday. Why not have the flags at half mast for the rest of eternity?

This doesn't deserve a response but here we go anyway.....
are you fucking serious?
So....a soldier who dies in service of this country is the same as someone who dies from a heart attack and should get the same acknowledgement?
Are you seriously asking this question?

Aren't non-soldiers serving this country? Without non-soldiers or soldiers there wouldn't be a country. Also, you can't say that soldiers are serving this country today when the majority of Americans are AGAINST the war in Iraq. They are serving the will of the President, not the people. Also, I remember last year the flag at my high school was flown at half mast when people were killed by a typhoon in Asia. Again I repeat, why not fly it at half mast everyday?

There is no point in bitching about the media. Anyone with half a brain knows that the mainstream media coverage is a joke. The goal is to entertain, not inform. Entertainment guarantees people won't change the channel. Informing with facts may do the same, but not quite as well.
Is anyone really surprised at the amount of coverage this gets compared to more important issues? Murder, death, rape, racism, shootings, fires, tragedies get people emotional and wanting to see more. If the media were not for profit...well, I'll not bother ranting about it, hopefully most people in the war room already agree on that point.

This is stupid, one is a tragedy and one is an occupational hazard. If you really can't see the difference then I don't know what to tell you.

I think there would be an outcry in the military community if we kept the flag at half staff for people who died from heart disease.
Can't say for sure though.
