I can see how that's confusing. That's the St Louis FED but the data is nationwide.

That's exactly what you'd expect during a real estate slowdown.

I agree...I just don't see how borrowing another $700BN will have any impact on that.

I agree. This was a horrible idea and I am suspiciously appalled at the amount of final support of this bill.
As Jay Leno sad, "A failed president and a failed Congress pushing a bill to bail out a failed stock market. How could this fail?"

We would expect to see layoffs in any downturn.

A couple of my friends have been looking for jobs for months. One of my friends applies for 3-4 jobs a week, every week. Nothing.
The people across the street moved out. When I spoke with them they said that it's just too expensive and they need something smaller.
One guy I know moved back home to live with his mother. He's 31, has a college degree, and works a customer service job through a temp agency.

Unemployment (during recession)
Current - low 6% range
2002 - low 6% range
1992 - high 7% range
1982 - high 10% range
Seems pretty normal at this point...

Sounds like your friends need to lower their standards and work their way up after getting an entry level position.
The people across the street should have done better financial planning and not bought a house they couldn't afford in the event of an economic slowdown.
Why is a guy with a degree working at a temp agency? This one needs to raise his standards.

There are stories like this during all economic times...during recessions (which we are most certainly in at this point)...there are just more.
