But if some thug wants to make it personal, then yes, there is a reason so many cops keep more than enough guns and ammo at home.
Protecting some rich mans investments? Isn't that what our soldiers are doing also? Police, like the military, can't think about the big-picture of their mission, only the mission. Yes, if a cop started thinking "I'm going to catch this armed burglar because he stole something from the billionaire Wal-Mart company and he may shoot me if I try to arrest him for it" then our police departments become weaker and order in society slowly erodes as consequences become less likely.
I do my job with absolute respect to every citizen. I believe 110% in the 4th amendment, every word of it, and would rather quit than violate that amendment. But I also will protect myself at all times, on and off-duty.

Sad that the top rich people in america are the real criminals. Maybe you will start to understand one day.

Were they operating as vigilantes, helping the innocent by jumping in front of bullets? No, they were doing normal jobs just like everyone else.
Being a police officer is just a job, like any other. If the police officer salaries were doubled tomorrow, you'd see normal folk lining up to get that job. If the police salaries were cut in half tomorrow, you would see police officers leaving the force for normal jobs.
Are there some Tackleberry types that live and breath law enforcement? Sure. But that's a very small number of police officers.

WWII is a bad example because they were drafted. Not 100% voluntary.
As for the staffing you mention, police departments nationwide are suffering a major staffing shortage. Just Google police shortage or staffing and you will see it. It is very bad at some depts, with staffing being as low as 50-60%. The war is taking a lot of reserves out of PD's, and the military is offering more bonuses and pay, thus taking some recruits that may have otherwise became cops.
You are right, there are many people who would be willing to do this job but aren't. But it still comes down to that- being willing to do it. And yes, if pay went up, there would be more applicants. Many depts are actually raising pay a lot to fix the staffing shortage. Many people, however, would simply never be willing to risk their lives for a stranger.
As for Tackleberry- hey, whats wrong with that, he's my role model!!!!

Only in theory. I could name all of the prominent American familiy names that, as all good drones, we Americans idolize, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

No, some are, just like some poor people are criminals. There are rich criminals, absolutely. What % of rich are? Likely very very low. The FBI usually handles the rich criminals because their crimes almost always cross state lines. I once worked in a very wealthy part of ATL. I busted more rich white kids with cocaine and weed than poor kids. Why? Who knows.

After all, we work for them because their (and our) tax money pays police. So, we should give them what they want, and quit! A nation with NO cops!!! How awesome would that be??? Lets see....

Here is where the problem lies... YOU WORK FOR THE PUBLIC. Time and time again I see predatory cocksucking police watching a person who may have had a drink or two go to their car and turn the key. BAMMM! They get hit with a DUI. If the Pigs truly worked for us, they would stop the citizen and make them get a taxi home. That is working for the public.
I could go on with other predatory behavior of the cocksucking police, but I will not bore you... we all know the policies these power mad shit bags have.
The truth is, most police just harass and badger the general public. There is a small percentage of real criminals and most police would rather bother law abiding, harmless citizens than do actual police work.

True. BUT, isn't it a noble and honorable thing in our society to work hard and provide a better future for one's children? And if they do the same for theirs, and so on, that family will rise in status.
I'm guessing you mean the Hiltons in Hollywood, Mannings in the NFL and other families who have had wealth for a long time. I know there are others, just two quick mainstream examples.
The beauty of our country is that ANY family has the opportunity to become rich. The odds aren't good, because 300 million people all want it. But every family is one talented kid or one good investment away from joining the elite.

I know you already know, but it's because the police are an organization about making money for the government for all real intents and purposes.
