Alan Greenspan: "Iraq War Is Largely About Oil"

In Alan Greenspan's memoirs he writes, "I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil,” he says.

This could be one of the most debated statements for the next few months. What do you think about such a statement coming from such a high-ranking and highly-respected (and Republican) figure?

I think it's common sense to anyone with an IQ over 100.

Greenspan's IQ is easily 140+ so I think he knows what he's talking about.

This isn't something worthy of debate. It's simply a common sense statement of fact.

Let me translate what he said into language the layman can understand:

"I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil,”

Translates into:

"It makes me sick to my freaking stomach that people are so stupid that they believe for a second that the Iraq war is about ANYTHING other than oil. Human beings really are worthless sheep that are totally blind, deaf, dumb, and most of all, lost without a shepherd to guide them. Sigh. Why are most people such ignorant monkeys?"

Nice rant, but I have to add that the shift away from liberty and the increased overseas presence of troops and corporations makes a damn strong case for a motive of US hegemony.

Fuck Alan Greenspan. He sold out. Before he headed the Federal Reserve (actually not federal) he promoted Currency like the gold standard.
Instead he does a 180 and works for a corporation that fixes its numbers.
Two face.

I thought that was common knowledge.

Be him for a day and you'll understand that things aren't quite so simple.

Sure, but why do we want hegemony in the Middle-East?

Bingo.

Before we needed their oil, we didn't give a damn about the Arabs or the Middle East. Once the oil dries up we will abandon them to revert to their nomadic camel herding life styles.

I agree with Mr. Greenspan.

Iraq would offset OPEC.

Sure, inasmuch as we are securing resources for further aggression. I think we are talking about two different parts of the same puzzle.

I find it difficult to reconcile the utter failure to gain a single ounce of oil, with the contention that the war "was about it".

If Greenspan had said, perhaps, "to raise the price of oil through war making the prospect of oil shortages a greater reality" then I'd agree (although I do not see that as an intention). However, the United States would have to lay claim to the oil in order for his theory to be correct, which so far we have not. In fact, Iraqi oil is a nationalized industry, if I recall properly.

Greenspan was also quite horrifically wrong baout the mortgage crisis. The man is not a God, despite seeing the possibility (and doing very little) to stop the collapse of the 90's Internet Bubble.

Some have even suggested that this Randian is making a mockery out of the Federal Reserve to demonstrate its undo influence in a capitalist economy which is supposed to be chosen freely through the invisible hand.
