Israel launches a preemptive attack on Iran without having the OK of the US (that could happen, easily). Iran retaliates, things get ugly. At that point the President and Congress will have no political choice but to declare war on Iran; some members of Congress will point out that Israel attacked first, but they'll be dismissed as cowards.

Im curious to see how serious France is about stepping in to Iran. They keep saying a nuclear Iran could lead to them in the war unless they just meant war in general

If Israel is ever in serious trouble we will bail them out - at the cost of tens of thousands of American lives and tens of billions of dollars.

The U.S. can, and does, go to war without "declaring war." (Remember Korea? Vietnam?) Initially the U.S., from behind the scenes, would supply everything that Israel needs to stomp the Iranians. Then as the situation escalates, the U.S. Air Force would simply take out every major installation and critical infrastructure in that country. All the while Congress can be wringing their hands, disavowing the Executive branch's actions, and covering their political asses.
