Standing when a judge enters a courtrooms? Also a very sheep like attitude. Stabding when a ranking officer enters the room? Baaahh. Or maybe, it denotes showing a shred of respect. Whether you agree with the judge/pledge/senior officer or not, it is a respect issue. Also making them pledge is not necessary. But standing is a small price for respect, whether you say the pledge or not.

When the pledge quotes the Christian God, people of other religions have a right not to stand for that. Again, what if it was One Nation, Under Buddha or Allah or Satan. You wouldn't stand either out of "respect"

I don't believe in the Christian God, but i stand everytime and just don't say that part out loud...but i also don't believe an any other god so it doesn't bother me that much.

What fail to be able to divorce yourself from, is that I dont care about the religious aspect. It is about respect. For instance, I have been at hockey games where the play the Canadian national anthem. Am I Canadian? Fuck no. Did I sing along or say anything? No. I did however stand out of respect. Quietly, but standing none the less.

i don't think that they should be made to stand, but i also don't see why they wouldn't.
i wasn't even born in this counrty and i don't know the words to the pledge. it is a little silly to me but i have never had a problem standing for it or the national anthem.
it's a tradition.... show some fucking respect.

You are free to do what you wish. Huflung pu nonsenseical rambling about buddah or allah is irrelevent. As I said, what if you dont believe that the person who is the judge in a case is fit? You are still compelled to stand. You are not Honoring Christ by standing for the pledge, you are showing your respect for America. As I said in my other post, I have stood for Canadian Anthem/Pledge before, and I am no Canuck. But I have a modicom of respect for the whole affair. That may be difficult for some people to grasp.

Oh really? So if you were eating in a Muslim home, you wouldn't bow your head for a grace to Allah? If you were in a foreign country, you wouldn't stand for their national anthem? Do you speak loudly when touring a cathedral during a religious service because you're not a Catholic? Good luck doing business abroad or even getting along with anyone who doesn't subscribe to your personal worldviews. You people are so fucking arrogant and deluded that you honestly think that an act of respectful deference is some sort of sign of personal weakness or betrayal of personal beliefs. You don't have to believe in or agree with something to show respect to those who do. Standing is part of the culture, is written in the rules, and is a sign of respect for the country you are in and the school you are attending, and does not in any way represent selling out one's personal beliefs. As I said earlier, schools exist to teach professional conduct to the students, and part of professional conduct is learning the importance of respect for others and how to get by in a world that is much larger than your own mind and home. Some of the attitudes in this thread are ridiculous and embarrassing, and demonstrate exactly why many Westerners have a bad reputation when they travel.
