In trying to find what I told you about yesterday, King, in addition to fantasy fights sucking shit, I'm also being reminded how much BoxRec sucks shit as a historical reference. More to the point, it's their choices of what to list under certain fights, and while I know I mentioned this before on here, check this little bit out, which is written right after Langford fought Hague in May of 1909;
"New York, May 30--Sam Langford, of Boston, is billed in London music halls as 'the champion heavyweight of the world'. He is showing to crowded houses, and is raking in the money hand over fist.
The fact that Johnson has refused to fill his European contracts while Langford is on the other side, has increased the belief there that Burns' conqueror is a quitter. Langford has recieved a championship belt from the National Sporting Club, and says he will defend his new honors against any man in the world. He does not bar Jeffries in making up his list of desirable opponents, and says he will fight Johnson, winner take all." - printed in a few sources May 31, 1909, with this one taken from the Washington Herald
"A negro pugilist who is much in the limelight right now is Sam Langford of Boston, who has recently been proclaimed the heavyweight champion of the world by Lord Lonsdale and other promoters of the boxing game in England. The fact that Jack Johnson welched out of his match with Langford in London is the reason why the latter has recieved a belt emblematic of the title. The National Sporting Club declared the other day that Johnson's failure to live up to his agreement was equal to forfeiting the championship." - New York Sun, June 13th, 1909
The New York Sun also made reference to Langford being "recognized as the 'heavyweight champion of the world' according to England" a few days later in their June 17th edition.
As they did when Langford returned from England to New York just over a week later in their June 26th edition;
"Sam Langford and his manager, Joe woodman, arrived here on the Lusitania yesterday. Langford, it will be remembered, knocked out Ian Hague, the English champion heavyweight, in four rounds at the National Sporting Club of London recently and was promptly declared 'the champion of the world' by Lord Lonsdale and other English boxing authorities, who held that Johnson by refusing to live up to his agreement to meet Langford had forfeited his right to the heavyweight title."
"New York, June 26th--Sam Langford, the negro pugilist, of Boston, who recently knocked out Ian Hague at the National Sporting Club, of London, has returned to America. All Langford would say that he is willing to fight anybody, except Jeffries, and that, in as much as Johnson 'ran out' of his match with him, which was to have been held in London on May 24, he (Sam) is heavyweight champion of the world." - printed in various reports, this one taken from the Washington Times, June 26th, 1909
Etc., etc.
I've looked extensively before, and while getting sidetracked on what I was really supposed to be looking for, I gave another fairly extensive look again this morrning...Where the hell is this "colored" heavyweight title claim by Langford that BoxRec says he made, because I certainly have never seen it besides it being referred to as such when Johnson retired for a spell in Sept of 1912, and the title was split into two upon that announced retirement Of Johnson's?
Fucking baloney that site is with information like that I tells ya', as they are with some of their selected choices for "newspaper wins" concerning some of Langford's fights againt Barry*, Jeannette, Flynn, etc.
If going by the consensus or majority, Langford didn't lose that one six rounder to Barry in 1907 that they'd have you believe, as the NY Times have been the only paper I've seen that thought Barry won, as opposed to a good four or five that thought Langford won. Also, going by the papers, Langford won two out of those three "NC" that BoxRec have listed according to a few accounts that I've read, with the other being voted a "draw" by the only report I've seen of it.
Anyways, I got to run out for a spell, but I'll get back to what I was intending to look for when I get back.
