*Video* The Return of Israel Vazquez

When we last saw Israel Vazquez he had just engaged in what might have been the most action-packed trilogy in boxing history against Rafael Marquez. Over 25 heated stanza’s, Vazquez and Marquez kept escalating the intensity and violence of their now legendary rivalry. And Vazquez didn’t take the rubber match until the very last seconds of the 12Th and final round of their epic third encounter when he staged a heated rally that saw him floor Marquez late. And that was all the separated Vazquez and Marquez, one solitary point on the scorecards, which was a result of that late knockdown scored by ’Magnifico’.

Vazquez, had now joined the likes of Muhammad Ali, Riddick Bowe, Marco Antonio Barrera and Arturo Gatti, in coming out on top in besting their counterparts in a defining series.

But there was a heavy price to pay. In the immediate aftermath of this brutal slugfest, you could see the swelling and bruising on both Vazquez and Marquez. The blackening of their eyes had made them look like raccoons. They had put each other though the meat grinder. This fight, along with the previous 13 rounds they had battled, had certainly shortened their life spans as fighters, much the way other hotly contested rivalries had depleted the battery life of past boxers. Frank Espinoza, the manager of Vazquez had said that after that bout in March of 2008, that his fighter would- under no circumstances- fight the rest of that calendar year.

The well-earned hiatus would turn out to be much longer than that. Because in addition to the superficial damage suffered by Vazquez, he also had much bigger concerns- internal damage to his right eye.

" He told me about two, three days after the last fight with Marquez," said Espinoza." He told me that he was starting to see flashes and that he could see only halfway with the eye, the top. He couldn’t see the bottom. So right away, I took him to a specialist and they determined he had a detached retina."

Frankie, mind keeping these things to one thread that you consistently update? It'll keep the attention focused and your threads won't get buried that way.

Fox Sports en Español has picked up the broadcast rights to show the return of two-time world champion Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez in the USA this Saturday night. Vazquez’ bout against Angel Priolo at the Nokia Theatre LA Live in Los Angeles, as well as the co-featured bouts of Carlos Molina vs. Caesar Holguin and Luis Grajeda vs. Juan Carlos Diaz will air live at 7 PM PT (10 PM ET). Previously the telecast was only scheduled to be seen in Latin America.

Saturday, October 10, marks the much anticipated return of one of the most explosive fighters of the decade, former WBC super bantamweight champion Israel "Magnifico" Vazquez, who will step into the ring after an 18 months hiatus.

The fight night, which is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with the newly minted Espinoza promotions, is being held at Nokia Live in downtown Los Angeles. Vazquez will face the experienced Angel Priolo in his first bout in the featherweight division after going 25 awe-inspiring rounds against Rafael Marquez in what many consider one of the best, if not the greatest trilogy in boxing history.

"After a year and a half, as a fighter and as a person, I still have not been able to wrap my head around how the trilogy has affected the fans," Vazquez stated as he finished off a day of training on Wednesday. "I gave my best in those fights and I am glad that people appreciate it."

Days after the last chapter of the Vazquez-Marquez story in March of 2008 in which "Magnifico" was awarded a 12-round unanimous decision to retain his WBC title, it was discovered that Vazquez had suffered a career-threatening injury.

"After the third fight with Marquez, he called me and we went to the doctor and he was diagnosed with a detached retina," Frank Espinoza shared.

Espinoza, the 2007 Manager of the Year, not only helms the career of Vazquez, but also a small stable of up-and-coming southern California prospects that include Ronny Rios and Carlos Molina who will also be featured that night.
