Umm, after a quick peak I can't get behind Wills' mention as the best of Louisiana over Canzoneri, but what's even more puzzling is that they don't even mention Canzoneri as one of their "other notables"...What's with that?
I mean, Canzoneri did move to New York when he was a teenager (around 14 or 15), but during his fighting days he was still, at many times, being referenced as being from that state, and also Canzoneri himself always considered Louisiana his home and close to his heart. Hell, he was even inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame after his career was well done, so what's up with that non-inclusion by these guys?

To brush up on mine, I just tune into ESPN Classic. Every night they show at least two classic fights.

Good stuff. I especially liked the intro video. I never realized Jack Johnson was that much bigger than the heavyweights of his time. Or was that just for that one fight?

Johnson at 6’1 1/2” and around 210 was a decent sized heavyweight for his time, but the film you see there is of his fight with Middleweight Champion Stan Ketchel who weighed just 170 1/4 for the fight.

No question about it Sharks, good catch.
I can’t imagine though that this was a forgotten omission – not possible.
There had to be some criteria based thought that went into it.
Maybe because he was born up the road in Slidell, maybe because he was a “New Yorker” for so many years, buried in Maspeth, N.Y., but certainly overlooked was the aspect of him being a hero in the big easy – big time.
Certainly one of the greatest fighters ever to lace up gloves.
It was a dumb call, whoever made it.

that's interesting, I am in Washington, I don't think we've ever produced an all time great. Harry Kid Matthews, Eddie Cotton, Pinklon Thomas, Fraser Scott, and I think we had a middleweight whose name escapes me now. ernie steele? I think he might have been the most accomplished from Washington. Unfortunately we aren't a boxing state, we sure are a Martial Arts one though, Bruce Lee, Maurice Smith and many more spent lots of time here.
