I honestly think the Pryor defeats dogged him, tormented him, I may be wrong but I think they may have broken his spirit.
|
I don't think so, he and Aaron made a lot of peace with each other and became very good friends. Sold a lot of memorabilia together, too. They had a lot of love and respect towards one-another:
And Pryor helped him with his campaign for Vice Mayor:

AP: The thing that I'm tryin' to say is that Alexis is the real deal. I went to England two months ago and Alexis Arguello was running for vice mayor of Managua and I talked to him on the phone and said, 'Lex look, I'll come down there but don't let nothin' happen to me.' I know they got a lot of people over there fighting and I went down there. Me and my wife went down there and there were 350,000 people who showed up for one event. And now, he's the vice mayor of that city and he's my friend and that’s good because he's got a good personality. And his people know he is a real nice guy.

I still don't believe this was a suicide.

You guys mustve missed the Sports Illustrated cover story in 1985 detailing Arguello's comeback.
Talked about how his father attempted to kill himself by jumping down a well right in front of him, and that he told his son in 1983 he had cheated on his mother, used drugs, and wanted to kill himself.
I believe I have it here:
Alexis Arguello once considered suicide as an escape from - 10.21.85 - SI Vault
One of my all time favorites...just had a tortured soul.

I'm sure they were King, and I don't really know if the losses haunted him. What I remember pre-pryor was a great champion with lots of class and composure. After Pryor, he seemed to fall apart as a person. Alexis was such a good, decent, giving person it's just a shame. I wish I knew more people like him on a personal basis, I really do.

Immediately after one of the Pryor losses (I think the first Fight) he blamed Eddie Futch, saying Futch overtrained him, etc. That shocked the Boxing World because Futch is arguably the most honest person it's ever seen. But Alexis apologized for that behavior soon after. A couple of years after Alexis hit a very dark period where he seemed to lash out at some of the people in the Boxing Community. But it was also relatively short-lived.

Out of all the places to shoot yourself, why the heart? Maybe it wasn't a suicide, maybe it was the remnants of the Sandistas? Just guessing.

I've been a cop for over 26 years now, so let me say this with at least a small measure of authority.....Suicides are often misunderstood, misread and often unexpected. In the overwhelming majority of suicide investigations there are no suicide letters or notes. That's mostly Hollywood drama crap. A tortured soul often tries to make his/her exit quickly and is engaged in the most selfish act that they will ever commit. Often they give little thought to those they are leaving behind because they are in so much pain......and they want that pain to end.
In many cases a suicide victim appears to be very happy and ecstatic right before their death. This causes the family and loved ones to often yell "murder" when it simply isn't the case. The mind set involved is one of tripping the trigger or flipping the switch.....Once a person decides that they are going to commit suicide, they often appear happy or at ease, because they have just made the decision to do it....and they are finally at peace with that decision. The wrestling is over.
Suicide can run in families.....I've seen multiple family members (from various families) do themselves in over the years. In one particular family I can think of a father and three of his five sons committing suicide within a period of close to 12 years. All of them suffered from depression.
Woman tend to use pills.....or carbon monoxide. If they are going to make it messy with a knife to slit their wrists- they climb into the bath tub so as to not mess up the floor (it's a woman thing). Men tend to gobble their guns, hang themselves or drive their cars into concrete abutments.....but it's not uncommon for the reverse to be true in either case. Men tend to be a bit more graphic when punctuating their lives.
Gunshots to the body are not as common as head shots in men....You certainly run the risk of having to shoot yourself a second time if the bullet misses a vital. This point alone is, if nothing else, cause to give the case a 2nd hard glance....but I'll bet the authorities have already done that.
You have to look at all the factors involved in these cases. A gunshot residue kit may be able to tell if AA fired a gun.....but often those tests are unreliable (you won't learn that from CSI).
Either way.....his exit does nothing to diminish him in my eyes as the Greatest Boxing champion of his day.
God Bless AA.

Hear hear! Great post.
Maybe outside chance that AA shot himself through the heart so he would have his hero funeral open-casket.
