Sad, sad news. And all the more sad, as well as tragic, if he did take his own life. Regardless of that though, he'll certainly be remembered as one of the all-time greats of boxing.

This is really bad news and an incredible blow to the Nicaraguan nation as well as the world boxing community.
I’d met him a number of times in the 80’s and 90’s, the last time at the IBHOF and I have a great, great respect for him as a fighter, patriot and man.
I never saw a better technician in the ring.
Beyond that, his was a truly amazing life outside the ring, aiding people after the great earthquake, fighting gorilla war for his country, having his property stolen by Sandinista rebels, becoming a television icon in the 80’s and in the end becoming the beloved mayor (with the Sandinista party, amazingly) of the capital city of 1.7 million people.
Though he had a well publicized stint as a favored party invite of the rich and famous and developed a taste for blow in the process, that was a very minor part of his life and he kicked that and became everything you would hope for a legendary hero of the people.
He looked great last year when he carried the flag for his country at the Beijing Olympics and every indication was that he was a happy guy who was wealthy, beloved and clean for his senior years coming up.
From what I can gather, Alexis was shot in the chest and the first indications are a suicide whereas Alexis was reportedly suffering from depression.
I’ve never had the displeasure myself but I’ve seen clinical depression take down allot of good people.
It’s been a bad month for famous people.
Blows my day.

Thank you for this Kid. It was needed and timely.

RIP Alexis.
My dad always told me about the wars he fought in including with Pryor. I was just a toddler at the time, but after growing up a little and then watching tapes of him, he lived up to the Warrior that my dad described him as.

A sad day.
Alexis was my favorite fighter from the 70's-80's era. A class act who never said a bad word about his opponents. An all time great and one of the best body punchers who ever laced them up. His losing effort against Pryor in their first fight is probably the greatest losing effort in boxing history. Greatness in victory. Greatness in defeat.
RIP AA.

My feelings for Arguello are mixed. He was a great fighting machine and a true world class puncher spanning 4 divisions. But I'm not surprised this didn't happen earlier. He was a hero of sorts when I was a kid, and just another junkie as I grew into life. Sad story and all but he fell out the way most junkies do. Nothing unordinary about that.
