I got a call this morning about Alexis. Don’t this just fuckin’ suck ?
This is really bad news and an incredible blow to the Nicaraguan nation as well as the world boxing community.
I’d met him a number of times in the 80’s and 90’s, the last time at the IBHOF and I have a great, great respect for him as a fighter, patriot and man.
I never saw a better technician in the ring.
Beyond that, his was a truly amazing life outside the ring, aiding people after the great earthquake, fighting gorilla war for his country, having his property stolen by Sandinista rebels, becoming a television icon in the 80’s and in the end becoming the beloved mayor (with the Sandinista party, amazingly) of the capital city of 1.7 million people.
Though he had a well publicized stint as a favored party invite of the rich and famous and developed a taste for blow in the process, that was a very minor part of his life and he kicked that and became everything you would hope for a legendary hero of the people.
He looked great last year when he carried the flag for his country at the Beijing Olympics and every indication was that he was a happy guy who was wealthy, beloved and clean for his senior years coming up.
From what I can gather, Alexis was shot in the chest and the first indications are a suicide whereas Alexis was reportedly suffering from depression.
I’ve never had the displeasure myself but I’ve seen clinical depression take down allot of good people.
It’s been a bad month for famous people.
Blows my day.
