Montiel retains WBO title!
Fernando Montiel (33-2-1) retained his WBO super flyweight title via split decision over Z Gorres (26-2-1) on Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Complex in Cebu, Philippines. Scores were 115-111, 114-112 for Montiel, 115-111 for Gorres. Gorres was deducted points for holding in rounds ten and twelve.....super banatamweight Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista (22-0, 17 KOs) TKO'd Marino Gonzalez (29-9) in round three to claim the vacant WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight title.....Recent super featherweight title challenger Jimrex Jaca (28-3-1) KO'd Simson Butar Butar (15-6-1) in round seven of a WBO Asia Pacific title bout.
Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacman Pacquiao arrived at the Cebu City Sport Center and was greeted by a thunderous ovation. Despite the warm welcome, a good number of the nearly 20,000 crowd booed The Pacman upon his arrival. This as most of Pacquiaos fans have expressed their displeasure regarding the boxers plans of entering politics. Pacquiao was accompanied by Manila City mayor Lito Atienza, Filipino promoter Wakee Salud and the boxers usual entourage. Pacquiao also had a short chat with Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez and Sampson Lewkowicz.
Bai Elorde came out victorious in his pro debut as he decisioned fellow newcomer Joseph Mateo. Elorde is the grandson of Filipino boxing legend Gabriel Flash Elorde. scores of the three judges were 40-36, all for Elorde.
Bert Batawang scored a 4th round TKO victory over a game but outclassed Sofyan Effendi with two vicious body shots. The end came at 2:12. Before the knockout, Batawang dropped Effendi with a solid right hook to the jaw. A visibly wobbled Effendi got up at the count of 6 but eventually gave in as Batawang became more accurate and aggressive as the fight progressed.
AJ Bazooka Banal continued his spectacular knockout run as he dropped former regional title challenger Komrith Evereadygym with one vicious left hook to the forehead. Komrith never recovered from that single shot and was able to get up and regain his senses for about five minutes. Before the perfectly-timed punch, Banal tortured Komrith with strong right jabs. The end came at 2:11. Banal is now 12-0-1, with 10 KOs.
