GENERAL SANTOS City — Regardless of what happens in his political bid, boxing star Manny Pacquiao said he will need three months to prepare for a fight being proposed sometime in October by Bob Arum of Top Rank.
"I need three months to recover the strength that was lost while I was campaigning," said Pacquiao during a short chat with Manila-based sports scribes on Saturday afternoon.
"I think I have lost some weight because of the punishing schedule," said the 28-year-old Pacquiao, who challenges incumbent first district South Cotabato Rep. Darlene AntoninoCustodio when elections are held Monday.
Arum plans to see Pacquiao get back in the ring in the coming months against one of four guys on the Filipino southpaw’s hit list.
They include Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic, Marco Antonio Barrera and Humberto Soto of Mexico and Edwin Valero of Venezuela.
Asked what month he expects to resume fighting, Pacquiao said "September is early because I believe I need a longer time to get back in shape so October would be perfect."
Even before he fought and won against Jorge Solis of Mexico on April 14 in Texas, Pacquiao had been juggling boxing and politics by going house-tohouse in the morning, working out early-afternoon and speaking before large crowds late in the afternoon until evening.
Pacquiao resumed his campaign upon his arrival following the Solis conquest and has never missed a beat.
Told about Guzman being the top priority as of now, Pacquiao sounded a bit uninterested, telling his three interviewers that the New York-based Guzman, the reigning World Boxing Organization superfeatherweight ruler, "is okay" as an opponent.
Guzman’s camp has started initial negotiations for a Pacquiao bout and Arum expects to see a clearer picture of what’s going to happen next in the coming weeks as he would already know the result of Pacquiao’s quest for a congress seat and he had gone back to the States by that time.
A confidant of Pacquiao, Cebu boxing impresario Wakee Salud, believes a rematch with Barrera is still an attractive fight.
"Barrera is still Barrera and the public would want to see it happen since Barrera has said many times that he wasn’t mentally prepared the first time he met Manny (in November 2003)," said Salud.
The problem is that Barrera has a live contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and it doesn’t appear the big bosses there drool over the prospects of discussing boxing business with Arum owing to the promoter’s rift with De la Hoya.
