Funny thing.....Back in 75'-78' you could go to the magazine store and pick up "The Amateur Boxer", which was a great monthly devoted entirely to the amateur game.
Back then, the amateurs were exciting (no headgear, past paced 3 rounders) and I read detailed stories about the Spinks brothers, Howard Davis, Sugar Ray, etc.
They covered the international game too....those waz the days.

Found a couple guys to check out in neighboring cities. Good to know the names to look out for.
You would like the book, "The Gloves," by Robert Anasi. It talks a bit about how thinned out the competition in the golden gloves and amaetur events have become.
