Prison officer dies after jail bashing

A SYDNEY prison officer has died six weeks after being bashed at Sydney's Silverwater jail.
Wayne Smith, a senior officer at the prison, died today at Westmead Hospital after a six-week fight for life, a Corrective Services spokeswoman said.
Mr Smith's condition wavered over time, giving hope he might survive the head injuries, including a broken jaw, he suffered on December 11.
Inmate Carl Edward Little, 37, was due to appear in Burwood Local Court on February 21 charged was charged maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.
But those charges are now expected to be upgraded to murder.
It's understood Little has been moved to Goulburn's Supermax prison, where the state's worst criminals are kept.
Mr Smith was married with children and had 17 years experience as a Corrective Services officer.
His colleagues today expressed their sympathy for Mr Smith's family and offered them their condolences.
