Word. (BJJ + Muay Thai + Weights/GPP)
I've decided to finally get a log as i recently started training BJJ and a training log would be useful to help me keep track of all the damned techniques we learn!
Also i figured it would help provide some extra initiative. I haven't lifted weights for about 2 and a half weeks since i started BJJ. My best lifts before that sucked pretty bad, but i was improving constantly.
Deadlift = 255
Squat = 135 , never got into doing them until recently, then i injured my knee. Haven't squatted since june 19th.
Bench = 135x2
Height: 6'1
Weight: 190
Age: 20
I have BJJ Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. As of today, I am planning to use Mark Rippetoes Starting Strength routine, which consists of 3 fullbody workouts a week. It will require some fooling around on my part to figure out how closely i can train Weights with my BJJ.
The Routine:
Workout A
3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench Press
1x5 Deadlift
Grip Training: Wrist Plate Curls 5x5 each hand
Workout B
3x5 Squat
3x5 OHP
3x5 Bent Over Rows
Grip Training: Plate Pinch Holds 5x 30s each hand
I'll be alternative the workouts on a MWF basis, if it works out as planned with jujitsu.
I look forward to being able to share my growth with you guys.
Expect that first entry tomorrow
---------------------------
EDITED:
Date i started training BJJ @ GB: July 18th, 2006.
Date i recieved my blue belt: August 28th, 2007.

Very dissappointing day.
My god damn knee still isn't good to go to paralell. When i went to workout and found this out i was pretty angry. I Need to be squatting.
In addition to that, i have some sort of pull in my back and i can feel it everytime i take a big deep breath.
I hate to say it, but these two stupid injuries, along with shitty cramming for finals, and family interruptions. I just couldn't pull out the full workout.
The knee had me pissed, I did some sets of squats down to where i could before the pain started. It sucked, i want this damn knee to heal. Its fine for doing a lunge, but i can't squat down on it.
I dont know why i let my mood take hold of me so much. i guess i was also mad that i couldn't do the deadlift portion of my workout today either. So i went and cranked off my three sets of bench atleast.
3x5 @ 115 :\
I'm hoping that i'll be feeling better tomorrow overall, hopefully atleast the thing in my back. I'm sure the knee will be taking some time.
My main concern for tomorrow is finishing my final exam (330-630) earlier enough so i can get to BJJ by 5:45.
Time to hit the books so i can train tomorrow.

BJJ
Did the typical warm up, running, skip steps, pushups, upa's,neck work, inside outside shuffle. Then we did some striking and parrying for the self defense aspect. Simple punch-parry-punch, alternating back and forth for a minute. Did variations like ending with a elbow block instead of a parry.
Now for the good stuff.
We worked guard passes.
One was where we put the knee right ont he persons tailbone and opened his legs with my elbow and other knee. Put shin on thigh and hook foot. Step up with other foot to isolate other leg. Get arm under neck or planted over their should. Underhook other leg. Turn and fall onto my hip while pushing off with free leg, sort of rolling the opponent away as i turn, but then getting right onto them and getting side control.
Other one was where when you started to break their guard with the elbow/knee, they put their foot on your hip. You underhook their free leg, pull your arm that is holding onto their gi down (to avoid a possible triangle). Dip shoulder under the underhooked leg and plant up, reach with underhook arm and grab inside of opponents lapel and plant your hand. Take other hand and llift the hips of oppponent off the ground. Turn head and swing shoulders so that the leg passes you and you end up in side control. Establish side control.
Then we did sparring, 1 minute guard pass only. Each side starts in guard once.
First time i was attempting to break the guard, i really could not get anything. I tried the first technique but to no avail, it was very difficult to get my leg onto their thigh when i had created the space.
I sucked at preventing the guard pass, The second guy i went against was passing me at will. when i went against him he just seatbelted me against him and i was stuck pretty much for the full minute. Still, good times, i like when we get to spar for a bit at the end.
On a side note, studying sucks.

Weight lifting.
Just last night i found out that all this time i had been benching with a pretty close grip (fingers covering all the knurling right up to the smooth parts) so today i decided i'd give bench a try and see how it feels different. Also today i thought about trying box squats to see if i could do them.
Bench
10/45,5/65,5/85, 5/115,5/115,5/115 - a little bit harder, and i had a lot of trouble deciding exactly where i wanted my hands which is probably a reason it felt that way.
BOX SQUATS! i can do them although i did them onto my bench instead. Really had to remember to sit back then down, and not just down. I dont know if i'm doing them right, because i'd pause when i was on the box. Hehe, made it a bitch to get up tho. I did them with light weights as i'm trying to ease my knee into them. Knee got a little sore when i didthem wrong for the first set, then i started sitting back more and it eased. Time to ice it
5/45,5/75,5/75,5/75
Bent Over Rows
5/95,5/100,5/100. I guess doing 100 would be a 'pr' since i changed my bent over rows to the point where my back is paralell with the ground, and now i let the weight come to a complete dead hang between reps. Good stuff.
Back to the books before BJJ later this evening.

BJJ
Quick warm up.
Today we worked on taking peole into our guard from standing. It is important to have a good stance so that your knee is stable. With my strong leg forward, i use right hand to grab their collar, left hand grabs their right elbow. I move my left hand to open up their side. Swing left and right feet up around their back, hold myself up until i can lock in my guard, then fall back. Be sure to maintain grip on their rightarm sleeve. Now, switch the hand that has the grip on this sleeve. Afterwards, underhook their right leg with the hand that is now free. Switch grip back. Post your right arm behind your head a little and shoot your hips into the knee of the leg that is underhook. This should throw them off balance. As they fall, open your legs to prevent crushing them. Keep your hips on the man (now on their back), and walk your upperbody around until you have achieved full mount. Secure position.
Next we worked a standing guard pass. Secure both of their lapels with your right hand, left hand holding their right arm (which would probably be holding onto your gi). Rip their grip on your gi free by opening their closed hand by pushing your thumb through. Hook grip the sleeve of the hand you just freed, and pull it across and attempt to tuck it under your right arm, thus neutralizing both arms. if you can't get their arm under yours, pull it across their body atleast. Now, Step up on your left foot, while mainting posture. Turn your right leg out a little, then step up onto the foot there. Stand all the way up, while maintaining a hold on their sleeve. Turn your hips out and step back a little, this will break their guard. Quickly pin the leg with your knee, and hook your foot on their thigh. lean forward, secure their head. Drop onto your hip, while maintaining the hook on thigh with your left leg. Push off with other leg, and assume side control.
After that we sparred, minute rounds alternating.
first session, simply trying to break the guard vs trying to maintain guard. I did good against my first partner, not letting them break my guard, and i got one or two good passes on them.
Second partner, rule change, now we are allowed to try sweeps, and also submissions. I managed to break their guard, and pull of a sweep when it was my turn to maintain guard.
Next partner, trying to break his guard, he threw me in an armbar. Now while doing this, he kicked me in the eye so my contact fell out lol. Sio i had one arm stuck, and with my free hand i decided i should pick up my contact haha. I am fairly confident i could have escaped this armbar if i had not grabbed my contact. I didn't get a chance to let him try to break my guard as i was fixing my contact, i actually missed out on another 2 rounds witha different partner because of this.
No worries, next up i got to go against my instructor. Schooled, utterly. It wasn't bad though, but i wasn't able to do much.
After that it was my turn to take control of timing the rounds so i got a rest, although i wasn't very tired at all actually.
I think thats when the actual class ended, but afterwards he said he was willing to roll a little more after class. Me and one other guy rolled with him. I did much better in this session, he got me with 3 or 4 armbars, but i was doing pretty good at defending position. Once i actually broke his guard and established a solid side control. My friend said that the instructor was looking at him like i was doing a good job. Afterwards he asked me if i had any other grappling expereince because my movements looked good. Good confidence booster
overall a good day, but DAMN, my elbow is sore as hell. Thank god for ice.
Now, Back to the books.

today we worked more guard passes, this time when they had the butterfly fully locke din and thad their head tight to your chest.
One you grab onto the back on of their gi, and pull your right elbow down over their arm, then with your other arm, you underhook the opposite leg. you now sit back on your butt to ruin their posture, and turn them. key is to kick your tope leg up to prevent it from getting caught.
other one was where you stood up adn pushed their knee aside with yours and shuffled into side. Alternativey, you could push their knee aside, and pull their arm down and get full mount.
I'll edit this and add in more detail later.
EDIT:
Forgot about doing this other guard pass for the butterfly.
Put your head on one side of their hipe, put your shoulder onto their body. Kick your legs over to teh opposite side of your body, ending up with your back on your opponents chest. To aid in going over the legs, use your right hand to punch under there leg and mvoe it out of your way slightly. Be sure to turn towards their legs when trying ot secure sidemount, turning towards head leaves you open for them taking your back.

BJJ
Today we went over all the passes we worked on throughout the week.
First we went over the 2 passes from closed guard, the one where you pin one leg down and the other where you get your shoulder under that leg instead.
Then we sparred just these two with 2 different partners, 2 1 minute rounds each.
Then we went over the standing guard pass, but didn't spar this. We did work on the butterfly pass ad we sparred from that position as well.
My sparring was pretty good today, i got 2 passes on my 1st partner, he passed me once i believe. 2nd partner nearly got apass, but i kept him locked in half guard instead. I passed him twice. Third partner, when we worked butterfly, he was very effective at preventing me from passing. Butterfly seems to be my weakest so far. When it was his turn to pass me, he managed two, but on one i put up a really good defense by managing to slip my one knee in between my body and his and held that position till the end.
That was all we did in sparring. My damn contact continually gets fucked up all the time. I"ll get used to it i guess.
i had a chance to stick around for the all levels class right after, but bunk ass studying prevails yet again.

Box Squats
10/45, 3/55,3/75,5/95,5/105,5/115,5/125 I guess this 5/125 is a record for me as back when i first started squatting back in june i only got up to 3/120.
Bench press- 5/95,5/105,5/105, my shoulder was feeling pretty sore today from BJJ so i didn't go as hard as i could. Just kept it at my comfort level.
BOR - 5/100,5/100, 20/45 Shoulder again sorta stopped me from doing a final heavy set. the quick 20 was good tho.
Barholds with thumb-lessgrip 30s/100lbsx2 30s/115x2
