So, on Saturday we had a club grading thingamajig, and as a consequence of my stellar (read: decidedly average) performance I'm now in the advanced class for MT. The class is held an hour later than the class I was in previously, so now I've got MMA/BJJ from 6-7 and MT from 8-9 which leaves me with an hour to fill between classes. Thankfully a friend is keen to do BJJ drilling during that hour, so it's all worked out pretty well.

In other news, I've decided to cut down my strength training sessions to 2x/week. With all the MA classes, lack of sleep and my slack eating I'm just not recovering well enough when I'm lifting 3x/week. I'm sure it'll slow down my progress, but until I get my eating sorted and my recovery time improves, I'm not going to be making good progress anyway. When I'm at uni again next year I doubt I'll be able to fit in as much MA training, so I'll probably increase the lifting to make up for that.

Monday 17 December

BJJ/MMA - 1hr
Drilled:
* sweep from 1/2 Guard to Mount
* roll from some weird Judo headlock position to Mount
* roll from Mount to Guard, sweep from Guard to Side Control, sweep from Side Control to Mount (repeat ad nauseum)
I need to start making sure I remember the names of these.

BJJ/rolling - 1hr
Rolled with a couple guys from class. SOme of the time taking it pretty easy, stopping periodically and figuring out what we could do from whatever position we were in. Heaps of fun, but really tiring. Got caught in an armbar a couple times (always when trying to do a sweep from Guard to Side Control, but I've figured out why now) and various chokes.

MT - 1hr
Spent the class building up a couple of long-ass combos. Finished up with 2 minute pad rounds. Completely destroyed when I got home. Slept like a log.

Congrats on the move up! I wouldn't worry about dropping the strength training down to twice weekly. =)

Tuesday 18 December

Thanks liquid, it was basically my one training goal for the year, so it's good I snuck in there at the last possible moment.

Overhead Squat
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 5 x 1 (warmup)

Zercher Squat
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 5 x 2 (warmup)
30 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

I was finally struck by the blindingly obvious -- Zerchers should be done on my OHP day so I'm not having to do so many powercleans in one session,

OHP
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 5 x 2 (warmup)
22.5 x 3 x 1 (work sets)

Deadlift
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
80 x 5 x 5

I'm looking for some BJJ resources at the moment. What I really want is a breakdown of the basic positions and the basic sweeps/submissions you can do from each. Anyone have suggestions? Had a look at some books by various Gracies but they were more advanced than what I want. I'm trying to put something like this together for myself but I always forget the names of the things we learn in class Stupid brain!

Wed 19/Thurs 20 December

19th
BJJ/MMA (2hr)

In class we covered:
* Bear hug takedown - basically grab the guy round the waist, pull him towards you while bending forward, and walk him backwards. Once he gets off balance, trip him. Land in Mount.
* Some other takedown - get an underhook, straight arm the guy's free arm at the wrist, shuck his shoulder up and sneak under it to his back, grabbing the bicep of his other arm. Stick your leg out behind his legs and pull him to the ground.
* One other thing which evades my recollection now.

After class I rolled a little bit with one of the guys from class, and then drilled some guard passes, two arm bars and the triangle choke with one of the instructors.

MT
Warmed up with 2x2 rounds of skipping.
Drilled the same long-ass combo that we did on Monday night. See if I can remember:
Opponent throws SR, block with left arm, opp throws LH, block with right arm. LE, RE, LK, LRK, Opp throws SR > Probe, opp throws SR > slip LH, SR, RK, RRK. Obv. not meant to be a realistic combo, more to work on timing/distance/footwork.
After that we drilled some zig-zag footwork stuff.
Finished up with 2x2 min pad rounds.

20th
teh lifting

Overhead Squat
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 5 x 1 (warmup)

Front Squat
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 5 x 2 (warmup)
30 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

Still working on my form. Seems to be getting better, but my back is still rounding a bit at the bottom. Will continue at this weight til I can do the damn lift properly!

Bench Press
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 5 x 2 (warmup)
25 x 3 x 1 (warmup)
37.5 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

Really starting to struggle with this,

Bent Over Rows
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
17.5 x 5 x 5

28/29 January

Christmas made me soft (mostly around the belly). Quit my job to go to Uni full time (BSc Computer Science). Switched up my schedule a bit to fit in with classes, so I'm lifting in the mornings now.

28th
BJJ/MMA (2hr)
Club grading followed by ~45 min rolling off and on.

MT (1hr)
Club grading.

29th
teh lifting

Front Squat
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
20 x 5 x 2 (warmup)
25 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

Still some flexibility issues making me tuck under at the bottom. Might be hamstrings I guess.

Bench Press
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
20 x 5 x 2 (warmup)
25 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

Bent Over Rows
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
20 x 5 x 5

4th, 5th, 8th Feb

4th
BJJ/MMA (~2hr)
Covered basic arm bar from mount and guard, and a guillotine from guard.

Then rolled for about 4 rounds of 5 minutes in total.

MT (1hr)
Covered some nice combos with inside leg kicks and feints.

5th
teh lifting

Front Squat

Wgt. x Reps x Sets
20 x 5 x 1 (warmup)
30 x 5 x 5 (work sets) forgot to add weight.

20 x 5 x 1 (warmup)
35 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

Deadlift
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
65 x 5 x 1

April 1

Cool, so I 've been incredibly slack in updating this thing. I've also been a bit slack with my lifting. It's just possible there's some kind of correlation there... I'm turning 23 on the 5th and I'm feeling the need to get some shit done, you know? So I'm going to be more disciplined.

In other news, I attended a BJJ seminar last month with John Will, who heads up Will-Machado BJJ Australasia. It was badass. John is a fantastic instructor and if you get a chance to take a class with him I heartily recommend it. We spent 3 hours on the Crucifix. It was freakin' sweet. I also picked up a couple of really small things that have helped my game in disproportionately large way. And that's just great.

1st April
Squat
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 3 x 2 (warmup)
32.5 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

OHP
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 3 2 (warmup)
30 x 5 x 4, x4 x 1 (work sets) [Missed the last rep of the last set. Should get it next time.]

Deadlift
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
80 x 5 x 1

7 & 8 April

Noooo....I missed a workout The end of term at uni and my birthday both conspired to make sure I had no time. Same weight as last time due to said slackness. Excuses excuses...

7 April
1hr MMA class - we did standup, it was ghey.
1hr BJJ rolling - Got a noob with a guillotine. I'm so fucking manly. He was an ex-highschool wrestler, so he held his own pretty good apart from that. It was pretty interesting actually, rolling with someone with such a different style.
1hr MT - Defence against the front-kick/probe/teep/whatever-the-hell-you-happen-to-call-it.

8 April
Squat
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 3 x 2 (warmup)
32.5 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

Bench
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
25 x 3 x 2 (warmup)
37.5 x 5 x 5 (work sets)

BOR
Wgt. x Reps x Sets
15 x 3 x 2 (warmup)
30 x 5 x 5 (work sets)
