Weight Training, BJJ, and a little MMA

Hello. As you can tell by my user name, I am not Shayn Davis, but I am a beginner BJJ player and just had my first competition. 3 wins, 2 losses, not too bad.

The low down:

Been training for 4 months at Butch Hiles BJJ & MMA (Butch Hiles) which is under Marcello Monteiro. Stand about 5'8, 180lbs, mostly all belly. Just started weight training, and will start doing a little muay thai and judo this week.

My training schedule will be (more or less)
Monday: BJJ
Tuesday: Weights
Wednesday: BJJ
Thursday: Judo & Muay Thai
Friday: MMA (no gi & kickboxing)
Saturday: Weights
Sunday: BJJ

All the weight training will be s&p approved compound lifts, two full body days. Low reps but low rest periods too. Some bodyweight stuff thrown in for good measure.

Goals:
Any and all competition, emphasis on bjj. Competing gives me something to work toward, keeps me motivated after I have a bad training session, tests what I learn, and its fun. BJJ is the most accessible, but I also want to do boxing, kickboxing, and even some mma down the road.

Wednesday, September 9th

BJJ:

Started class with some omaplata drilling. Drilled omaplata sweep to side controll to stepping over armbar. Then omaplata sweep to sitting on their chest to omaplata. Then we drilled countering figure four'd legs during the armbar with a wrestlers sitout.....Annnnnd, then we drilled a counter to that counter, the reverse armbar.

Pretty easy going, most of us had just competed so today was meant to be a fun day. For the rest of the class, we just rolled.

I felt okay positionally, but I just could not land any submissions from my guard without getting passed. Set them up okay, but was just too loose or too slow when I tried to execute them. Still very tired from the competition, work, and yesterdays weightlifting.

For now on, I am gonna make sure to log every training session.

Friday, September 18th

I went to morning class today, which only three other people showed up to so it was basically just an open mat. Me, a really strong no gi guy whose on a white belt level, a blue belt, and a purple. It was a pretty good mix. We practiced escaping triangles a little, but after that, we just rolled.

First I rolled with the no gi guy. He's a short stalky powerlifter, mostly goes to mma class, not super technical, but doesn't make too many stupid mistakes either.

High Points:

-Any time he was in my guard, I had no problem breaking his posture and getting the wizzer control position set up.
-If I was in his guard I passed with ease
-Got his back and RNC'd him at one point during a scramble

Low Points:

-Got dominated in 98 percent of the scrambles, usually ending with me getting my back taken and choked
-My submission attempts were much tighter then usual today, but still not quite enough to finish a guy that strong, which would then get my guard passed for my troubles.

Next, I rolled with the blue belt. Big guy with a very calm technical game.

High Points:

-Passed a blues guard! He got a little lazy pulling guard, I got my knee up and my elbows in. I worked the pass underhooking one of his legs and pinning the other which ended with me in half guard. From there I started with a perpendicular pass and turned it into a tripod pass to kesa gatame. Felt GREAT!
-Regained guard after he mounted me with a technique I hadn't got to work before. Hands in his hips, buck up and bring both my knees in.

Low Points:

-Got swept from side controll. >.<
-Almost escaped from mount a second time but gaytardedly slipped one hand under his legs right into a triangle.

Finally, I rolled with the purple belt. 135 pounder, slick as greased lightning. Also a good teacher.

High Points:

-I sat out to escape from being sprawled out on, which I've never done before
-I effectively used turtle to a single leg to escape side controll once
-I did extremely well defensively in his closed guard. I only got swept once I was well into a pass attempt.j
-Worked (although failed) some passes I hadn't before.

Low Points:

-Gave up an easy kimura in his half guard.
-Rolled right back into side controll from turtle position trying to do I dont know what the fuck.
-Gassed

It was a good day. Good workout and I learned a few things. I learned the Ezekial choke no-gi, which should help me in a couple situations I find myself in a lot. I learned to counter a really high guard by tripoding up and putting my knee in. And, I got a lot of help from the purple with countering de la riva hooks.

Feel great, time to sleep.
