Time To Focus (Martial Arts / Kickboxing)

Name: Derek
Age: 18
Height: 5’7
Weight: 150 LBS

I created this log to document my progress, to be critiqued, to receive help (I want to improve even if it means sucking up my ego and pride), and for support to help keep me motivated.

Goals: To find out if the world of combat sports are meant for me and if what I feel in my heart is meant to be. Basically to finally get my ass some competition and woop some mutha fugin ass.

Also to stay focused, dedicated, to see how far I can take my skill, and how far I can push my body. I want to break the barriers that have stopped me in the past.

So what are your lifting goals? If you have any.

I posted this in a separate post because its a long ass read and I don’t want to bore people who don’t want to read this. NOT NECCESARY TO READ

My lack of focus is the reason why my prior LOG didn't work out - my biggest downfall is my problems with my commitment and focus. I have all the talent and tools but I have never utilized them. I need to become a man and stop making excuses and allowing myself to become distracted from my goal. In the past couple of months I have been giving a huge opportunity - now its in my hands to see what I make of it.

My training background goes like this:

4-6 years Taekwondo (up till I was about 14)
1 year Goju-Ryu Karate
6 Months Boxing
1 Year of Goshin-Ryu Karate (INSTURCTOR)/ KB /Taekwondo/ Krav Maga
another 4-6 Months of Boxing

I have an unusual experience in the world of martial arts but I think the constant changing and blend of martial arts has giving me a lot of experience and knowledge. I often stay at a school soak up what I can and when I realize the school doesn’t meet my needs or my knowledge and skill cease to grow I move on. I love traditional MA but the lack of realism and full contact competition leaves a distaste in my mouth - and my exposure to boxing has giving me a glimpse of what its like to compete and train as you fight - I would have stayed with my boxing instructors but nothing ever worked out, I have a natural love for using my feet and knees (I felt confined being restricted to punches), and at the time my lack of funds and transportation caused a problem.

I want to be a fighter. Its up to fate if that ever works out. On three different occasions I was supposed to have amateur fights (1 in boxing/2 in Kickboxing) and to my disappointment none of them worked out. Due to the lack of support and opportunities I thought that I was going to give up on this dream and most likely follow in my families footsteps and join the military. BUT after 10 years my father has come back in my life.

And with his re-entrance brought support, funds, transportation, and most importantly opportunities.

Improve your skills before you start training? Isn't that what the training is for?

I'm also interested to see what your lifting goals are.

Good luck.

Yea lol.

After the New Years I begin to train with my new trainers and begin to focus on competing. I want to be in semi shape and make a good impression.

Eh - I'm not sure about my lifting goals yet. I need a little more guidance before I venture into the world of barbells and deadlifts.

Daily Training: 12/30/07

-1 Round Jump Rope (Warm Up)
-25 Jumping Jacks (Warm Up)
- 25 Mountain Climbers (Warm Up)

- 5x3 Minute Rounds Shadow Boxing: Nothing special, working on basic kicking and punching form trying to perfect the most basic mechanisms of the simple movements. Also concentrating on being fluid using punching and kicking combos. I have a bad habit of training my punches and kick separate - and since you fight the way you train I need to fix that.

-2x3 Minute Rounds Heavy Bag: Mostly working on moving in and out with my Jab

-4x2 Minute Rounds Double End Bag

Before bed I prob. will stretch and do some light kicking

Things I Need To Work On:

-Pushing off the back of my foot and turning my hips into the cross and bringing my hand back.
- To become more fluid in transitioning from my punches to my kicks
- Left Rear Roundhouse (esp. when throwing it to the legs)
- Front Right Roundhouse
- Overall footwork and heavd movement
- Cardio - I will prob. start running once school resumes. I just bought a pair of new aisics and I’m hoping they cure my shin splints.

1/1/08 - Daily Training

1.25 Mile Run - It was really interesting to be running on this day. I saw a lot of obese men and aging women (mid 40‘s) on the road beginning there new years resolution. I wish them the best of luck but I wonder how many of them will keep up with it. The new shoes REALY made a huge difference, I felt like I was running on clouds and at the end of the workout my shins felt 100% - my holiday food almost ended up all over the road though lol.

25 Minutes Static/Dynamic Stretching
50 Reps Wall Round House Warm up
30 Reps Side Kick Warm up
15 Reps - Side Kick, Rear Roundhouse (L/R), Lead Roundhouse, Spinning Back Kick (AIR)
2x3 Minute Rounds Shadowboxing

1x1 Minute Round MT Low Round House (Heavy Bag)
1x1 Minute Round Teep Kick (Heavy Bag)
1x1 Minute Round Side Kick (Heavy Bag)
1x1 Minute Round Round House (Heavy Bag)
1x1 Minute Round Jab (Heavy Bag)
1x1 Minute Round 1,2 (Heavy Bag)

3x3 Minute Rounds Heavy Bag
R1 - Heavy focus on kicks (low, high, body) Setting up my kicks of my jab or the 1,2.
R2 - Teeping and Jabbing my way in then fighting on the inside and attacking body. Working on just being relentless and vicious on the inside, doubling up on uppercuts and hooks, jabbing on the way out and remembering to keep my head and feet moving.
R3 - Freestyle

3x15 second 1,2 punch outs
1 Round Double End Bag
15 Minute Round Stretch
5-15 Reps RH and Side Kick

I can't wait till I get my flexibility and basic kicks back (Roundhouse, Side, Teep, and Back Kick) because I want to start working on some of the more fancy ones...lol I cant help it I guess TKD never left my bones. But TKD did install my quest for perfection I wont even begin to touch my other kicks until the my roundhouse is flawless. Patience Daniel san
