I'd either get a bull mastiff, bulldog, or a basset hound.

pit bull IMO. they're really good dogs as long as you socialize and train them from day 1.

It might be hard to find one for that price, but anything is possible. The reason they're so expensive is they're a pain in the ass to breed. It takes artificial insemination and c-sections which mean large vet bills.
To combat the high cost of breeding, some breeders take shortcuts and breed dogs in the same blood line or dogs that shouldn't be bred at all due to health issues.
Before you buy a bulldog, make sure you see BOTH parents AND their papers. If they're related, go somewhere else. Both parents should be healthy and from different families. Otherwise, you never know what you're going to end up with.
Ever since Ozzy Osbourne got a bulldog, they've become pretty popular and for good reason, they're cool animals. But there are a lot of dumbshit breeders out there. Be careful.

Yes. That is a must.
I'm partial to Boxers and American Bulldogs.

I'd never let a pitbull anywhere near my family. I don't give a shit who trained them.

Okay Horsie, we can wait 2 weeks. thats probably best for me too.
And really bacon? don't buy into the media hype.
My dog plays with my nephews since they have been born, now they're 5 and 3. he lets them do whatever to him. Plays great with other dogs too.
Hes pretty much just a big pussy at heart, just looks tough.

My EX GF's dad raised grand mastiff's, those are some powerful fucking dogs, i'm not sure if he was trying to intimidate me by showing me all 5 +120lb mastiffs or if he was just proud of them, either way she was home on time

The only pitbull I know personally is one of the friendliest, most affectionate dogs I know.
Doesn't change the fact that he's a raw lump of solid muscle, and when he sits on your foot, you're not going anywhere until he decides that you're done petting him.
For my money, a generic mutt in the general size/type that you're looking for is the way to go. As noted by others: "pure breed" dogs are subject to a lot of problems resulting from inbreeding from unethical breeders, and hideously expensive from the non-inbreeding, ethical breeders.
If you're looking for a dog and not just a showpiece, the local ASPCA/Humane Society/Rescue shelter is the way to go.
