In WW2 (slightly before actually) Italy invaded Ethiopia (and actually managed it!) in 1890s they attacked Ethiopia and lost. __________________

Oil was not discovered there till after WW2.
Italy was angry at its preceived meager share of the spoils in the Versailles treaty, and felt this land grab would not be opposed. They successfully invaded Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, but oil was not discovered there till after WW2, and the subsistence farming cultures there were a drain on Italy rather than a gain. __________________
