In Germany, you'd have to pay your marginal income tax rate onto those earning, which would be around 35%. This leaves you with around $2,700 and no earnings accumulation. Add interest to the equation and you better find a side-job.

After taxes I worked out £20k invested would get me £100 a month. So with 500k I would need a side job but get paid about what I get paid now give or take without having to worry about pay.
I'd have to work just to do something with myself

Makes sense. Trades are so huge here now. The Journeymen are retiring so you see a lot of advertisements towards youths about possible careers into skilled trades. It's a lot different these days. I walked passed a construction site on my way to work and all the dudes were younger than usual and didn't look like the beer bellied chain smokers you would usually see even 10-15 years ago.

Here (US) skilled labourers get paid well, relatively speaking, it's becoming a skilled labourer thats the pits. If I went into construction or something similar now I'd be making 1/3rd what I'm making now for the first several years.

Same as here, but I couldn't ever afford to drop my wage down to half ish what I make now.

Unfortunately theres only so much expansion you can do in london.
A lot is renovation and upgrade work.
Also, construction is a hard trade on the body, so peope tend to retire 'early' (or if they can go into other areas, like project management)

What is considered a "good" hourly wage in the US? Pre-tax.

Varies. Around New York City "good" would be $70,000/yr+. Around rural Mississippi you'd get by pretty easy on $20,000/yr+.

Expansion and renovation work usually require high skilled workers if it is do be done with any amount of decency. Oh wait, we're talking about the UK.

I'm on about $50k after my bonus and thats pretty low for even outside of london
I'd be content for a few years on $80k
The whole army thing. I'd take a pay cut to $43k for a year, but after that I'd be on 54k scaling up to $60k in the first couple of years.
BUT my outgoings would be 1/4 what they are now
