OK, for whatever reason, none of my threads in the appropriate forum are going through...so I might as well just ask here:

Do gymnasts make for good martial artists?
In your honest opinion, yes, no or maybe?
For example, I tried learning how to do some kick techniques, but it felt awkward, because as a gymnast I'm used to kicking in a very different way, I guess you can say 'artistic' as in I take artistic gymnastics (as opposed to rhythmic, with all the hoola hoops and crap). Do you think flexibility and agility in being a gymnast is an advantage to being a beginner in martial arts, or will take too much time in readjusting to certain moves?

I really try to have some moderation but yes, I'm a zero to nut guy. I've told my wife I wish there was some continuum, but no, it takes nothing to set me off, less as I get older, and its full blast. My wife always tells me its not my job to right wrongs or step in but I feel like if more people stood up and said something punks wouldn't get away with so much. Its when people don't say anything, through fear or apathy, that assholes get away with the shit they do.

Having no experience in either, I'd opine that prior experience in an athletic endeavor outweighs un-learning any movements......

It depends on your fighting style. They usually have good balance and strength to bodyweight rations. A guy like Frank Shamrock does gymnastics and is a wizard on the ground. Then you've got guys like Liddell or Rampage who probably can't perform many if any gymnastics moves. You can definitely relearn the techniques.

Nice pic. reminds me- I pride myself on word knowledge, and my wife asked me if a fellow teacher used a word right- he said 'quixotic' and pronounced it 'kwik-sotic'. I said no, no way, it's 'kee-hotic'. But to make sure, I looked it up, and damn if I wasn't wrong, and the guy right.

Did you tell her the correction? Or just "accidentally" let that one slip from your memory? DQ is one of the only books that actually had me in tears from laughing while reading it.
