One thing I love about IM is, they provide a great example of just how important vocal melodies are in rock 'n' roll songs. The first two Maiden albums with Paul Dianno are pretty mediocre, in my opinion. Then they get Bruce Dickinson, who starts slapping all those soaring, heroic-sounding choruses onto everything and wham, "Number of the Beast" is one of the best ****l albums ever.
I really think if they'd kept Dianno they'd be just another NWOBHM footnote.
I've always meant to check out Samson, the band Dickinson was in prior to Maiden. Maybe some of their stuff is on th' YouTube. __________________
