Disclosure: I own a PS3. I do not have a 360 because most of the games on it that I want to play (Gears of War, Bioshock etc.) are on the PC.
I would be concerned about the 360 hardware. Most people I know that have one IRL have had some problems. The newer ones may not be as problematic, but I can't say for sure.
The PS3 has the advantage of Blu Ray which can either be a really good thing (I like movies and don't mind spending a bit extra for th Blu Ray version) or a meh thing if you don't care about them.
360 requires you to pay ~$50 IIRC for online (the free online sucks), but it is better for most games than the PS3. Sony has been promising to fix the online problems* for a while. but haven't yet. People are anticipating a big patch this summer but no guarantees.
*There aren't problems with playing games but little things like not being able to access friend lists in-game (you have to quit the game you are playing). Basically, the 360 interface is smoother, but while you are playing, most games are the same online.
If you plan to be online with the 360 using wireless, it costs an extra $75 on Amazon (cheapest I could find), which is a ripoff.
Finally, I would recommend goingt o mayberry and searching ps3 and xbox 360 and looking at some of the threads. A lot of what is said in them is junk from people who love one console or the other, but look at the exclusive games for each.
If you like Halo, and Ninja Gaiden etc. go with a 360.
If you want Gran Turismo 5 and Me
tal Gear Solid, go with the PS3.
