Oh, I thought kickboxing was a generic term used to describe anything using punches and kicks.

It is. Muay Thai is a specific type of Kickboxing.
Magic: Very few places in the US allow elbows even in sanctioned, pro Muay Thai bouts. I think California and Nevada are the only states.

Actually kickboxing is a Japanese invention from the 20th century, Its not even a martial art its just a specific set of rules for ring combat. Its packaged as a martial art because it has a mainstream name/image. Muay Thai has been around for far longer yet not many people know anything about it.

Now you are just arguing semantics. Kickboxing is a very general, generic term most people take to be boxing with kicks allowed. Muay Thai is a more specific version of that allowing knees and elbows. Yes, Muay Thai came about first.

Im not arguing anything, im saying the history of the sport.
It was started in Japan to put Karate fighters vs Muay Thai fighters in the 20th century. Its not a martial art its a set of rules that allows fighters from different standup styles to compete against each other. If you watch K1 there are Muay Thai fighters, Karatekas, TKD practitioners and probably even Savateurs.

Kickboxing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are many arts labelled kickboxing including Japanese, American, Indian, Burmese kickboxing, as well as French savate. The term kickboxing is disputed and has become more associated with the Japanese and American variants. Many of the other styles do not consider themselves to be 'kickboxing', although the public often uses the term generically to refer to all these martial arts. The term kickboxing' was created by the Japanese boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi for a variant of Muay Thai and Karate that he created in the 1950s. The term was later used by the American variant. When used by the practitioners of those two styles, it usually refers to those styles specifically.

It is basically a clusterfuck of a word over here that is generally referring to anything allowing boxing and kicking, not just the original martial art of kickboxing.
