You could go with Jim Beam Black and notice a huge improvement in taste and smoothness as far as bourbon goes. If you want to make all other bourbons taste like sewage, try Woodford Reserve (although it'll probably cost you a bit more in the Great White Norff). If you want a good scotch whiskey, try Johnnie Walker Black Label.
Don't mix anything with any of the stuff listed above. Drink it straight or with no more than 2 ice cubes. When you drink good shit, you save money on mixers.
