So...I'm the new kicker for my Rugby team. I complained last year about how our backs were useless when taking penalty/conversion kicks, and that I (a forward) could do better than that. I was told to put my money where my mouth was, so I did.
We had a test today to see how many people were options for kickers. Three positions kicking from a tee. One to the left, one dead center, one to the right. 4 out of the 10 people trying got all three. The coaches stopped there, but the four of us were curious to see what we were made of.
We kept taking the kick from further and further away to see who could still get it. Eventually it was down to myself and a new guy this year who weighed about 60lbs less than me.
After a long time matching each other kick for kick we switched to drop kicks. That's where you literally drop the ball and let it bounce slightly off the ground before booting it. Doing that in the middle of play through the uprights is worth 3 points.
I got all 3 angles, he missed them all. Ta da, a 205 forward, 20lbs heavier than the kicker from last year, is now the go to guy this year.
