Not especially. Most shooting involving private citizens happens at fairly close range even if a long gun is being used. I mean, there's no place in my apartment you're gonna be more than 25 feet away from me.

Apparently, S&W made a deal with the Clinton and Gore administration to start selling only guns with trigger locks and a system that makes a unique print on the bullet so that it can be traced. This was to get out of several lawsuits over gun deaths aimed at S&W.
