Overcomplicated? Unreliable? Your source sounds a little unreliable, no offense.
XD Torture Test
I think that test says a lot about reliability. Which, btw, probably isn't that important if you just plan on using it at the range and not for a CCW. That test is something that no 1911, Hi-Power, or many other guns besides the Glock would be capable of.
As far as being over complicated, the XD has something like 6 more parts (don't remember the exact number of parts in each) than a Glock. Considering that it has a loaded chamber indicator, a grip safety, and a striker indicator, that's not many more parts. The design is actually extremely simple.
I also like the trigger and ergonomics of the XD better. The first time I hold a pistol or shoulder a rifle or shotgun, I close my eyes and bring the gun up. If I can open my eyes and the gun is where I need it to be, then I know the gun fits me. For me, this is true of the XD. It has the same grip angle as a 1911, which is probably why. Your results may vary.
I'm not trying to be a dick, but rather than just using someone else's opinions as your own, why not do a little research for yourself and form your own opinions? Which, I realize, you are absolutely entitled to.
As far as the cock indicator, I can take it or leave it. I prefer the single action of the XD over the glock, which has a semi-double action. If the striker is not cocked on a glock, the trigger does not reset. The trigger being forward serves as a cock indicator. To each his own.
A lot of people don't realize the difference between the actions. The XD is a true single action. When the trigger is pulled, it simply releases the striker. On a glock, you are actually pulling the striker back for a small amount before releasing it.
I think glock triggers are atrocious. The XDs are okay when you buy them, but after you break them in, they become mighty fine.
I like the grip safety. It takes no extra effort to use it. If you are holding the gun in any matter in which you are ready to shoot, it is engaged. Chances of the trigger being pulled accidentally are very slim, but with this at least it is another safety feature. I'm all for automatic safety features if they aren't overly complicated.
To both: Sig makes a really nice gun, but you certainly pay for it. They have many more parts and are less reliable than a Glock or XD, but for a range gun/toy, they are awesome.
I hate newer-production S&Ws. Besides their politics, which I cannot support, the quality on a Smith is hit or miss. I had considered an S&W M&P (very briefly), but was shocked at the poor quality of the guns. I don't care to go into details right now, but their quality control sucks. You'd swear the guns were made by blind children in Uzbekistan.
Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with Glocks per-se. They are extremely reliable guns. But they don't fit me and my shooting style as well as other guns do.
