If you learn to control the head and body, you can avoid eating knuckles and work for armbars or sweeps. If you play open guard, then you can still eat said knuckles. Except the mother fucker can use his core and put more power into the shots.

It all comes down to the individual though. Some guys open guard is sick, and some guys closed guard is sick. Some guys suck at both. It just depends on your preference and individual skills.

I like butterfly guard alot, but have never tried it with strikes yet.

Makes sense, but if open guard is done wrongly in MMA then you will get KTFO easier (more power due to core).

I like closed guard right now with wrist control (probably not the best idea for me though), then work to open guard and go for sweeps, etc.

Well, you have to understand I'm coming from shooting a 7mm mag and a 300 mag, so the recoil feels easy. The .223 is a baby round. Sure, it'll go through armor, but I don't like the terminal ballistics on it personally. It's a suped up .22 round.

Ok, I see. Those are really the only rifles I've shot, so the AK seems to kick a bit. Then again, I'm shooting at a pretty high rate. I just have fun with rifles. I'm much more accurate and slow with pistols.
