The instep isn't designed to be the weight bearing portion of the foot. Stand up and do the following:
1. Stand with feet 6 inches apart.
2. Roll your feet inward, placing all your weigh on your instep. Note the position of your hips.
3. Now roll them outward to place the weight on the outer edge of your feet. See what it does to your ankles, knees and hips? If you aren't absorbing the load correctly when you run, you can fuck up all kinds of stuff over time.
Most people run the inefficient way (including me). The heel of the foot strikes the ground first, killing a large portion of the energy created my the back foot. The process goes on and on and on. Kenyan runners tend to strike the ground closer to the ball of the foot/midstep area. THis takes less effort.
Things you can do to run better:
1.Get some decent shoes (I like New Balance)
2. If you're flat footed, get some orthotics (shoe inserts) to correct your arch.
3. Read up on proper running form.
4. And last, but certainly not least, "RUN ON GRASS!!" - Revok
Running on pavement is hard on your body.
