Tuesday - 8/7/07
6:30am - Watched Tommy Hearns fight Wilfred Benitez. Tommy was as on-point as ever, but I've rarely seen anyone with the defensive skills as Wilfred. Too bad he was crazy as a box of Chimpanzees.
8am - 2 mile run.
10am Gym Time:
Richie had to go to a Press Conference today so we were on our own, for some reason I felt like shit today so I didn't work too heavy and no PM workout.
5 minutes dynamic stretch.
2 Rounds Shadowboxing.
3 rounds rope-skip.
4 rounds body-snatcher, I think my right uppercut is the goods.
4 rounds Heavybag.
2 rounds letting Diego work head-movement against my jab and a couple crosses, sort of no-contact sparring.
1 round Shadowboxing to cool down.
Funny part today was Chad leaves his gear in Richie's Office, which was locked. So he had nothing. Had to borrow my 12oz gloves to work the bag and neither he nor Edgar could spar. But I think they're just a little scared. Diego and I kick the shit out of each other all the time when Richie isn't around.

Hey KK, what would you suggest for some bag gloves? Mine are too soft and my wrists and knuckles are really starting to hurt.
EDIT: my bad, just did a bunch of searching and found some options.

My mom got me a pair of Reyes gloves from Mexico years ago, I still have them, best gloves I've ever had. Just saying though. I don't expect you to fly to mexico.

Wednesday - 8/8/07 AM Workout:
Going to post this now before I go to work since I"m pretty fuckin' frustrated and maybe if I vent I won't carry it around all day.
7am - 2.25 mile run.
10am - Gym:
5 minute dynamic stretch.
2 rounds Shadowboxing.
3 rounds sparring - first two rounds were with Diego, did alright. Last round was with this dude "T" from Whoopie's squad who is a little bit bigger than me weight-wise. In the beginning I noticed right away he's a counter-puncher, so I adjusted and started coming to him more. Problem is I wasn't moving my head enough and was getting tagged pretty easy. Funny thing is in a thread in the Stand-up section I said no longer is the straight right the "Southpaw Killer" but the left-hook is. Well I proved that as I got tagged with them a lot. I started to get his timing toward the middle of the round and landed a couple good jabs and stiff straight lefts of my own, but I felt a half a step behind the whole time. Towards the end of the round he got me with an extremely well-placed liver shot and I found out right then that I wasn't entirely recovered from Diego's liver shot the other day. That was all I could do. Richie began his usual round of shit-talk, so I felt pretty bad. I apologized to Mike and T for such a shitty showing, and assured them I'd do better next time.
We're going to hook up again on Friday, and it'll be different. However, T did have some compliments, he said I hit hard as Hell with my left-hand, and that I 'm faster than he is. He said "you was catchin' me upstairs an messin' up mah nose so I said maybe if I go to the body I can slow this mufucka down." I said "well you damn sure did that." He also said that he went to the body because I was hard to hurt upstairs. He said he'd catch me with them hooks and I'd just walk through them, so he went downstairs. His other teammate (the Amateur going Pro who was doing conditioning with me the other day), said "All you gotta do is move yo' head a lil' bit mo' and let ya hands go a lil' mo', but you aight." So I didn't feel like too much of an asshole. Just in retrospect sitting here I should have put in some more rounds.
Finished up with 4 rounds on the Heavybag.
I'll be doing a night workout and will post it after I do. Just wanted to get that shit off my chest.

Yeah, left hook is money against southpaws who use a low lead hand, especially. I always learn the most getting clobbered than I do with anyone else, and I'm pretty sure that's something everyone can agree on.
New pro from my gym makes her debut next Wednesday, check it out:
Garbatt Preparing For Pro Debut
Motor City's "Lethal" Lindsay Garbatt is currently in training for her long awaited debut in the professional boxing circuit.
She squares off against veteran Ela Nunez of Jamestown, New York. Nunez, a veteran of 5 professional bouts, had a very successful amateur career and currently has a record of 3 wins & 2 losses as a professional. She is presently on a 3 bout winning streak, but that is about to change.
Garbatt knows she is the underdog, but she plans on giving Nunez her first knockout (Nunez has never been stopped as a pro or amateur). Lindsay is currently training twice a day, boxing in the morning, and weights in the afternoon. She has been experiencing personal bests in the weight room, & feels like she is stronger every day.
"Lethal" Lindsay knows that she is fighting in her opponent's back yard, & doesn't plan on falling victim to a hometown decision, which is all too common in the pro boxing game. She has been training for this bout since her last amateur fight in October 2006, where she beat Sweden's national champion, and is now hungrier than ever to get back into the ring.
The card is being called "Fight Night at Frontier" and is being held at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York, on August 15th.
Tickets are available on line at http://www.rochesterboxing.com/events.htm

Sparred with her a lot when I first started, she has the technical acumen to go far. Taught me a lot!

I favoured the left hook to the body against south paws a lot. Now granted I didn't have the kind of trainers Kabuki has but the theory was closest tool to closest available target. Lead left hand, exposed right rib cage.

Well I will say this, I didn't go down or even take a knee. One thing about me that I want to establish is that I've resolved for opponents to say the same about me that Ali said about Chuvalo:
"They're gonna bury that man standin' up."

Wednesday - 8/8/07 PM Workout:
Alright well after thinking things through here's the points I came up with to move forward on:
- I had a shitty day in the gym, it happens.
- Aside from my distraction (kinda had my head up my ass), I won't take anything away from T, he's quick, hits hard, is a good counter-puncher, and I still feel like I got a knife in my liver thanks to he and Diego both.
- I need to get low against guys taller than me more, T specifically had his body exposed and was BEGGING to be jabbed in the chest. Not sure why I was head-hunting but I need to not do so.
- I also need to stop sparring guys I do so with for the first time like a wounded animal, like a guy with something to prove. Sure walking through hooks is fun, but not necessary. Second times I always do significantly better.
- Richie's negativity is starting to be a liability. As of right now I'm all but certain I'll be training with Mike by month's end.
- Other guys have already had worse days than me. There's two guys in there who won't even spar Chad Ganigan, he's 0-2 as a Pro with 2 KO's, and he's tiny, they're both as big as I am and are scared to spar him.
2 rounds skip-rope.
4 rounds speed-bag.
4 rounds double-end bag working on staying low, throwing combinations (I was looking for one punch too much), and head-movement specifically, moreso than usual and not so much counter-punching.
60 push-ups.
30 dips.
2 rounds Shadowboxing to cool down.

Friday - 8/10/07
REDEMPTION: - n. 1 an act of redeeming or the state of being redeemed.
2. deliverance; rescue.
6:30am - Wind sprints.
My format for sprints is hard to describe, so let's just say I ran a shitload and didn't get killed doing so.
10:30am - Gym.
I was all geared up to get in the ring again, as I feel I know what I needed to do to correct myself from the bullshit showing I had last time. But when I got there no one familiar was there. So I started up alone.
5 minutes dynamic stretching.
3 rounds Shadowboxing.
3 rounds speed-bag.
4 rounds Heavybag.
2 rounds body-snatcher.
Just then Big T walks in. I says to him "ya late." He said if I wanted to work we could go a couple rounds. I was already worked out but figured "fuck it"...because if not I was going to have to wait until Tuesday to show I ain't no bum. So we got to it.
3 rounds sparring.
I totally altered myself for this one. Got lower, kept my right and left hands a little more frontal, and moved my head an assload. I saw I was harder to hit, but it was also harder to swing off of everything I was doing. Plus, T can adjust in mid-round, so he got low with me. I can say he got the better of me, but it wasn't no one-sided ass whoopin'. I was right there with him every step. Mike was actually coaching me a bit because T is one of his boys while he's here (he's in town from Cleveland) and Mike knows Richie ain't REALLY training me. First round ended and Mike and T were both impressed. T gave me a "good round brah." He also stepped back and said "nice" when I slipped his left hook, hit him in the body and then let him run into my right hook.
2nd round I was admiring my work a little too much and he turned up the pace. I was mesmerized by a quadruple jab he kept pumping, but I know what I should have done. I was mainly jabbing him in the chest and trying to get to his body, but the dude is all kinda quick.
3rd round I was mainly on the defensive because at this point I was worn the fuck out. But, I DID manage to hit the lull where we were both just feinting and not seeing any opening with T. The place where Boxing is Boxing. But he got to me first. lol I caught him with a couple counters. However, the important thing about round 3 was Richie was watching. He came out just before the round started and said "is he kickin your ass?" I said "what if he is?" The bell rang and I got out there. But I kept moving and kept up the pace, and didn't get hurt to the body or head this time, just didn't land as much as I should have.
Then came the best part. Richie kissing my ass. "Hey, you did good." "Yeah, you should maybe try training me." "Well you looked different this time, and you were hangin' with him." "I ain't no scrub, Richie, and I ain't just no warm body." "Well I see that much now." "I know I can catch him, I was only about a 3rd of a step behind him." "Yeah I saw, your eyes, you looked like a Viper waiting to strike." "Yeah, remember when you said a guy my age aint got no competitiveness in him?" Richie laughed in that "you got me" sort of way.
Unfortunately for him I don't give a fuck anymore. His negativity is becoming a real liability as I stated earlier, and Mike is taking a very chief interest in training me because as he said to me today "I been you. I was a late bloomer." Mike is going away for 2 weeks because Whoopie has a Title Fight. When he gets back, we're gonna see if we can work something out.
I told T that from now on he'd get that good of work from me or better, he said "good lookin' out."
That's it for today, and this weekend is off-time because Mama Dukes is coming into town tomorrow.
