Good for Wes...im glad he's back in there getting work. Seems like everyday you have a new story about him in the gym.

If you don't mind sharing what are Eddie's thoughts on Wes? and Mike's thoughts?

Pain don't hurt.

I read through your log and I remember one of your post saying how Mike asked if you wanted a fight but he had to go on a trip so you guys couldn't talk about it more, but maybe I missed it but did you talk to him about that later on?
Mike's not in any great hurry. He laughs at me when I say I'm a little old to be starting out. Last he said he wanted a little more polish because he wants both Diego and I to turn heads.

He's been showing up early. And we're on friendly terms, I like him.

They both feel Wes has all the talent, but gets lazy in the Gym and loses focus too easily.

Thursday - 4/3/08.

Today was "more balls than brains" day at the Gym for Liu...

6:50am - Watched the full fight of Chavez/Taylor I, so Diego could see how JLC didn't let Taylor's speed and Boxing ability deter him from fighting his balls off.

Chavez/Taylor I.

7:45am - 1.5mile run.

10:30am - Gym Time:

Leg felt fine today. Loaded up on anti-inflammatories yesterday.

1 round ring-jacks.

2 rounds Shadowboxing.

Jesse Reid came in, and asked if I wanted to spar Tim again. I let him know Mike wasn't there, but Diego and I intended to do 6 rounds anyway. He asked if I'd work Tim into it at least a little bit. So I agreed, because I'm like that.

7 rounds sparring, two partners.

1st 3 rounds with the LHW (or Cruiserweight) Tim.

Did markedly better this time I felt. Didn't let the pressure get to me as much as I did the first time, or his Southpaw stance.

Things I did well:

- Fast combinations finishing with jabs.
- Footwork, he didn't corner me NEARLY as much in these 3 as he did in the first 2.
- Getting lower.
- Using straight punches and uppercuts, not hooking with the hooker.

Things I did not so good:

- Integrating offense and defense. Even Jesse said I tend to do one or the other.
- Ducking. I tend to either stand low or high, and don't roll or duck as much as I should.
- Defend the liver shot. He got a bunch in on me.
- Turn him. But mostly on account of he was heavy.

Last 4 rounds with Diego.

This was craziness. Tim wears me down because he's like sparring a brick wall. Then I get the angry Messican fresh off a day of rest, throwing VOLUME. lol

Things I did well:

- Jab at first.
- Defense at first.
- Fire back at first.
- Endure an ass-whoopin' in the 4th.

Things I did not so well:

- Keep from fading.

It was good shit. The 4th we agreed to go Messican, and at first I was holding my own. The 3rd was probably my best round because I was jabbing Diego's face off and landed a pretty check-hook that got a "NICE hook" from Clarence, Jeff Mayweather's Heavyweight. And for like the first 45 seconds of the 4th I stood and traded, but then I just ran out of gas. I still landed back a bit, but mostly just tried to endure the round without losing my headgear or mouthpiece. But we got lots of compliments from all who watched.

2 rounds double-end bag. Surprisingly I got a second wind, or rather, 22nd wind.

2 rounds Heavybag. I got on the bag next to Calvin and unloaded power-shots. I intended to push him (he just got done sparring Tim right when this happened), challenging him to not let a little guy like me out-bang him on the bag. He responded well, and turned frightening.

- 2 rounds speed-bag.

FRIED.

And also, how often do you find yourself landing the punch to the liver against orthodoxes?

You need to start watching more Boxing Bro, familiarize yourself with the lingo. First "posting" and now "fading"...lol

Fading is when you get tired and your form goes to shit.

Friday - 4/4/08.

6:50am - Watched the "Beyond the Glory" of Roberto Duran, If any of you MMA heads have never seen it or heard his whole life story, you'll be interested in his early days, and what he considered himself.

Duran BTG.

7:40am - 2m run.

Workout followed immediately as we did work at the house today.

2 rounds Shadowboxing.

4 rounds mitt-work:

Started out just letting Diego run numbers to warm up.

Then we moved into structured footwork/combination punching drills. Diego has a tendency to not throw when he moves laterally, or to rely too much on 1-2-1-2-1-2. Today he adapted well to using the other punches, just has to do it in the ring amid combat.

4 rounds with the body-shield:

Letting Diego learn to implement dirteh tactics. Stepping on the foot, body-bumps, etc. And how to make it look accidental. Diego's got strength and cardio enough that he should put all effort not just into throwing non-stop punches, but using his pressure to make every second of every round hurt for the other guy, from bell-to-bell.

4 more rounds mitt-work:

This was more about sneaking uppercuts and using elbows to turn the opponent when the horns are locked on the inside. And shoving off, pushing the opponent into punching range and then running combinations, or a single power-punch.

Altogether good work. Diego seemed to enjoy it immensely.

But his style is tough to learn as he likes to chase punches (slap-block and counter), not big on head-movement. So it's been a big adjustment to get used to his style, but there's a lot to be learned so I'm open to it, afterall the guy only lost ONE fight in his entire career, and that was to a MONSTER in Canizales, when he wouldn't make the weight anymore.

But, that being said onto the log:
Does our gym also uses that style? We use jab often, jab feints. No or little head movement. We block hooks and straight punches. We also slap the straight punches down. Like the opponent jabs with his left arm. Then I slap his jab down with my right hand and counter with a right cross. If the opponent does 1 - 2. Ten sometimes slap his jab + cross down and counter with right cross.

Which fighters use our gym style effectievely?

He's 23...hopefully he can get some wins in and build himself back up until as mind matures a bit. I guess what i mean is when he grows up. I remember 23 and I couldn't sit still.

I've grown to like Wes a lot after reading this log especially when he went allover town looking for the domincan dude talking shit. I like the combo of him and Eddie and I think its going to workout for the both of them.

No training to report this weekend, but I wanted to post a word of congrats to two Gymmates who won their fights this weekend, one of them being one of my very own stablemates.

Eddie Mustafa's Fighter Aaron Williams won his fight on ESPN 2 via stunning 2nd round KO.

And our stablemate Sharif Bogere, who formerly Captained the Ugandan National Team, wins his Pro debut against Ed Humes also making his Pro debut.
