i'm not sure why guys do that. There is no such thing as winning at sparring. You spar to get in condition and work on certain things. Sure, you know whether or not someone got the better of you, but in most cases, they should because you are supposed to be practicing new things that aren't comfortable. I absolutely hate sparring. Part of it is because I have a cushy white-collar job and I hate to be in meetings with marks on my face, but the other half of it is due to guys just like this. I could care less if someone thinks they kicked my ass in sparring......let's put it on a show and get paid.....if you can kick my ass when it counts, then it will mean something to me.

You mean you dislike the guy who was talking shit about Wes? Or guys like Wes who go to gyms to confront those guys. lol

Liu, that must be pretty sweet training out there. We get our share of seasoned pros that come through St. Pete to train and get work, but nothing like Vegas. Keep training hard.
|
Doesn't Birmingham still work out there from time-to-time? I see him when Winky's training here, but I know he's extremely loyal to St. Pete. It's like a dream training here. Shit-talking and getting pats on the back from former and current Kings. Never thought I'd be in this position, and you can rest assured I'm going to do everything to honor the opportunity.

I just got through all nine pages of this log and I gotta say that I'm loving it Liu. It sounds like you're having a great time and improving constantly. I look forward to seeing your first fight and I really hope to see you in Vegas one day. Keep up the good work my friend!
P.S. I recently watched the Frazier Beyond the Glory also. He's probably my favorite fighter of all-time. He was all heart and was a fighters fighter.
|
Whaddya mean "hope"...? You might just be AT my first fight. We'll meet, it'll happen. For some odd reason I've never doubted it.
Hey be sure and check out Diego's log, too. Especially if you want to read about what it's like to spar me. Heh heh.

Thursday - 10/11/07
Liu's body is not accustomed to the new schedule...
7am - Watched the infamous "no mas" fight of Duran/Leonard, too. Very odd fight. That's all I can say, see it for yourself for details.
7:45am - 2 mile run.
10:30am - Gym time:
Mike showed up right at 10:30! We were shocked. He said his wife has been getting on his ass about getting to us on-time. lol
1 round stretching and ring-jacks.
2 rounds Shadowboxing. Mike was full of compliments today, during the Shadowboxing he said Diego and I both now look like Fighters who are dangerous.
4 rounds Heavybag - I was moving a lot more and surprised by my own volume. Mike is honing my jab. I have a tendency to push with it when I set up other punches. He has me making it more impactful and stinging. He also gave me another combination: 1-2-4-2-3-2-1-1. He said every time we train he's going to give us something new.
3 rounds speed-bag.
1 round Shadowboxing while waiting for Diego to finish on the double-end.
2 rounds double-end bag. Again Mike with compliments. He said now I'm doing a lot of things he's never seen me do before. Tying things together nicely. He said now I look definitive. Then he said "Now before? I don't know..." I said "hey man I wasn't no bum." He said "nah I didn't say dat...but you was question mark. Now you period."
2 rounds rope-skip.
Conditioning:
50 medicine ball sit-ups.
40 medicine ball twists.
Gym Moments:
Mike was tooting his own horn a lot, it was hilarious. Demanding I tell him every compliment other Fighters and trainers have been giving us.
Wes and I were in the locker room and Hassim had us cracking up talking about how bad his neighborhood was.
"Man you can't be havin' money and shit. Them mufuckas'll take yo shit. You be drivin' around in da hood flexin', next thing you know them mufuckas got yo' money, shirt, shoes, AND yo' mufuckin' socks. And if you got a hat, dey got dat shit, too. And these is gangs of 14 and undas! Lil' fuckin' kids take all yo' shit!"
Oh and I found out what happened between Hassim and Rodney yesterday:
Mike was involved in the whole thing, Mike and Duncan playing peace-makers.
Says Rodney to Hassim: "Man you should let me train you."
Says Hassim to Rodney: "Nah that's a'ight. I don't need you."
Says Rodney: "Yeah that's why that old man knocked yo' ass out."
Says Hassim: "Fuck you, man."
Says Rodney: "Fuck you back mufucka. I ain't lyin'. You got mufuckin' handled."
That's when Hassim shoved Rodney and Mike stepped in. Mike told Hassim not to lay hands on Rodney, and tried to get Rodney to leave. Duncan meanwhile tried to occupy Hassim. But Rodney went back in and stepped to Hassim saying "come on then" and put his hands up. Hassim took a step towards him and Rodney tackled him and proceeded to ground-and-pound a bit before it got broken up again.
Mike said "if they gonna go on wit all dat fuck dis, fuck dat...den fuck de both of them."

Friday - 10/12/07:
7am - Watched Floyd "Joy" Mayweather Sr. fight Sugar Ray Leonard. If Floyd would have had more pop he might have whooped Ray's ass. There were times he was holding his own, and he fought bravely off the ropes. But this was when Ray was on his way up, and was just too strong for the young Floyd.
8am - 1.5 mile run.
10:30am - Gym Time. Mike got there right on time again.
1 round ring-jacks.
2 rounds Shadowboxing. Mike was giving us a lot of compliments. And I think he said something about having ideas for us.
4 rounds body-snatcher. I was mainly trying to work on speed of my combinations.
3 rounds speed-bag.
2 rounds rope-skip.
Conditioning:
Push-up circuit.
40 pull-downs.
30 pull-downs behind the neck.
Got a rare treat today watching Chris Eubank Jr. spar Carlos De Leon Jr. ( http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php...2606&cat=boxer ) Two Sons of former World Champions who look like they'll be good fighters themselves once they come into their own. Carlos also sparred Jimmy (this is his record: http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php...9539&cat=boxer ) And Jimmy looked much better this time than he did last time. Dude fights JUST like LaMotta used to I swear.
Saturday:
7am - Watched the Beyond the Glory of Larry Holmes. Man what a Fighter. Like Rachid said about Frazier, Larry was a Fighters' Fighter.
8am - 1 mile run.
6 rounds mitt work:
I took Diego on the mitts, letting him get more accustomed to the rythm, and throwing continuous combinations in sprints. 6 and 7 punch combinations, mixing in defense, chaining combinations that are that extensive together with double-jabs, and closing out rounds strong.

Both those guys are +240 and not in the best shape. Besides, Rodney's not much taller than me despite being +240. So I think his approach to fighting Hassim was the right one, catch him off-guard, don't let him swing.
But you know, when people say "pff I'll just take a Boxer down"...this lends credit to me always saying "as if you're the first person ever to think of that, it's something Boxers always face because if someone knows they Box, they know they don't want to get hit by them." Rodney's a Boxing Coach, and knew how to get a former World Champion on the ground.

Love the avatar, that was a fun movie. I'm going to check out Diego's log ASAP. I just have to ask one question... While I know your style might not need it as much, why did you and Diego cut your running down as much as you did? I know Richie was a very good fighter and I respect his opinion, but I've always been of the opinion that road work is what let's you do everything you do in there, and the more the better (as long as you can handle it, still train, and not burn out). Especially for Diego, who being a pressure fighter needs to have more in the tank than his opponent does... I try and run everyday, and try and get in a good 10 miles, but if not at least 6-8 (as you know from my old training log), and I can honestly say that on fight night/day I'm grateful that I did because it allows me to push the pace and never worry about running out of gas and burning out.

Ironically dude, most guys in the Gym (Eddie Mustafa, Roger Mayweather, Mike himself) would have a heart-attack if one of their Fighters ran as much you do. They believe running is good, but they also want you pushing it the Gym, and more importantly...avoiding injury.
Roger has a Fighter right now who will probably have to have achilles tendon surgery. He hurt himself doing too much roadwork. Then there's your tendonitis in the knee. Mike says 2 miles is good, 4 tops.
And he fought until he was what? 38?

7am - Let Diego peep Diaz versus Diaz from this weekend. Man that Juan Diaz is a cardio machine, but to his credit Julio tried to hang with him, actually throwing. But in the end, Juan was just too much.
8am - 2.25 mile run.
10:30am - Gym time:
1 round ring-jacks.
2 rounds Shadowboxing.
2 rounds skip-rope. I was sucking BAD today.
3 rounds body-snatcher. The good news is my right hook is starting to be as fast and crisp as I want it. And I can throw it after nearly any punch.
3 rounds Heavybag. This is when Mike showed up. He was late. He was getting on my ass about snapping my jab more.
3 rounds speed-bag. Mike was pushing me on this as well. Kept in my ear to keep the pace, while complimenting Diego as he Shadowboxed.
2 more rounds Shadowboxing working on the jab the Mike wants.
Conditioning:
Ab-machine circuit x 2.
40 medicine ball sit-ups.
50 medicine ball twists.
Gym Moments:
Richie's boy Luis is looking a lot better. Glad he stuck in there despite the butt-whoopins from Diego.
