Standard: We still have time to heal and win this damn thing. Anyway, Ms. still has the shame of not being about to out squat an old man with a bad back. In retrospect, challenging Ms. to a 500 DL race after I hurt my back may not have been the smartest idea.

I can't come close to either of you guys in ATG squats, which is what my focus has been, PL i am ok with. You challenged him AFTER you hurt you back? either your not very bright or you don't think much of the misses

Take care of that back of yours eh. This "listen to your body" stuff is something I'm trying to pay attention too as well. After a few weeks of a dull ache in my shoulder, finally I couldn't press anything at all, even sleeping on my right side was painful. Now it's better, but lesson learned. I'm on the Coan Deadlift programme, and you with your competitions, it's so tempting to just work on through to beat PRs and make the goal. My back is tender right now, feels like I'm one wrong move from being on the injured list again as well.

Take care eh!

Oyaji:

You’re a pretty smart and thoughtful fucker. It seems like a bunch of us are banged up. I hurt my back about 8 years ago, and as a result, my back would go out a couple of times a year. The thing that sucks is that S&P has actually helped my back problems. Deadlifts helped strengthen my back and as soon as I started doing them my back pain went away (except the soreness from lifting). What I need to get better at, however, is training hard and smart. I am a newbie to S&P, and I am still trying to figure out how to push myself as hard and do it without having my body break down.

How is the foam roller helping you? It sounds like the Coan DL program is brutal. From reading these boards, it sounds like the assistance work grinds a lot of people down.

At least as grad students, we can sleep a lot.

I *heart* my foam roller. A combination of poor posture and sitting here pwning the internet and reading PDF's of downloaded academic papers led to a fairly stiff back and hips. After foam rolling for a few weeks I figured out how to get it in the right spots, and I was finally able to stand up straight. The difference was amazing, the first time I stretched after foam rolling I felt a foot taller.

I sound like an infomercial. But the looseness in the hips and upper back is amazing.

The Coan programme is good. It's got two features I've wanted to incorporate, but never really did on my own. A speed lift and wave-pattern loading. So rather than create my own hybrid, I decided to do this. I did however, combine it with the WS4SB on the ME Lower day. I think the 3rd and 4th week will be interesting, 4th is a 10kg PR.

I know I should be able to sleep more, but generally I sleep 6-7 hours for a few nights, then I sleep until mid-afternoon to make up for it.

BBBP:

135x10
185x5
225x5
255x3
255x3
255x3
255x1
225x6 (too tired, too much wasted energy from before)

My bench technique, as I have stated before, sucks. I take the bar down so slow on the first rep that I don’t properly recruit the muscles to load and rebound properly (like a loaded spring – not a bounce). This means that I find reps 2-5 easier than the first, which is a little fucked up (the technique problem is only on the first rep). A buddy of mine is helping me with technique. I feel like I made a break through today. By feeling like keeping my elbows tucked in tighter than before, I can lower the bar smoothly and then drive. The problem was that this move is a bit unnatural. A couple of times I would focus on lowering the bar properly and then forget to drive. But by the end, I felt much better about my bench. Still, there was a lot of wasted energy on the bench. In a couple of weeks, I should be in good shape.

Dynamic Press:

SOHP:
105x5
115x5
115x5

Push Press:
135x10

Felt dynamic

Close Grip:
185x5
205x5

Tired – As I said, there was too much wasted energy because of inefficient technique, but I am fixing some flaws in my form.
