My First Powerlifting Meet:
Today was awesome; I had great success on the squat and some minor success on the bench and deadlift. I was still a bit disappointed with my bench and deads, which I explain in detail below. Unfortunately, I borrowed a buddy’s camera and the fucker was dead. I should get some pics later from USAPL.
I weighed in a 215 at the early weigh-ins. I actually lost 6 pounds over the day. Since I had nothing to but one protein shake in the morning and one glass of water, I was dying. I drank a gallon of water and 64 oz of Gatorade. I then went to Hardee’s and had one bacon thickburger, one chicken sandwich, large fries and a diet coke. I finished with a DQ blizzard.
SQUAT:
Warm Up: My warm up was shitty. They only three squat stands for 70-80 lifers and it chaotic as I was trying to warm up. The weight felt really heavy on the warm up. I worked up to 405, which felt like shit. I actually started to get nervous was worried about whether I would even get my first attempt. I did a few more reps at 315.
First Attempt: 197.5 Kilos (435.4). I smoked it – three white lights. They moved the lifters in really fast so I had to run out to the platform to get there in time. This weight felt like 225. It was really easy.
Second Attempt: 217.5 Kilos (479.5, + 4.5 pound Personal Record ). I killed this weight too – three weight lights. This was pretty easy.
Third Attempt: 225 Kilos (496, + 21 pound Personal Record). I was given three weight lights. This was a really hard, but good lift. My form was perfect. I was really light headed after this attempt.
I was really happy after my squats. I had several people come over and congratulate my on my squat, which was really cool. I was told that all were way past legal depth.
After I finished squatting my low back started to cramp, but nothing all that bad.
BENCH:
Warm ups: The warm ups went much better than squat. I worked up to 245x3.
First Attempt: 120 Kilos (264.6 pounds). This was really easy. I got two white lights because the judge forgot to say start and then someone yelled “take the fucker down,” and I started the lift. When I realized that it was not the judge, I moved the weight back up, and then she said start. I think they passed it because it I killed the weight and the judge fucked up.
One thing I noticed quickly (and everyone started complaining) is that the judge required really long pauses.
Second Attempt: 135 kilos (297.6, + 2.6 Personal Record). This attempt was easy, but I got two white lights. One judge said that there was uneven extension. This is a problem I have on heavier weight and I need to fix it.
Third Attempt: 140 Kilos (308.6) x FAIL. I started the lift off great, but I lost tightness at the bottom of the lift. This is another problem that I have to fix. If I kept tight, I pretty sure I would have been able to get this one – next time.
DEADLIFT:
Warm-up: My warm ups went ok. I started to feel really beat up at this point. I worked up to 365x3.
First Attempt: 187.5 Kilos (413.4). This was easy – three white lights.
Second Attempt: 212.5 Kilos (468.5, + 2.5, Personal Record) I got three white lights. This was a hard pull, but it went up pretty fast.
Third Attempt: 220 Kilos (485) x MASSIVE FAILURE AND I SUCK. I think I got a bit mental over the bar. I took way to long to start and when I did my hips started to raise too quickly. The bar then moved to far out and not up to start, and then I was fucked. Part of the problem may have been that I blew my load on the squat. No, that is not it; I just suck at deadlifing, and I am going to change that ASAP.
Overall – I was happy with my squat. I’m pretty mad about myself about my third attempt on bench and squat. I need to get back to the gym and fix my problems with those lifts.
I also wish I got more than 4 hours of sleep the night before.
I want to thanks everyone at S&P for their help this last year. Without you guys I would never be at a meet today. I want to thank NerdKing, Devil, Donut, Sombo and Zero for all of their help. I really appreciate their weekly input on my training and analysis of my lifts. I want to give a special thanks to Standard and Misses for their hate - they sort of got this whole S&P thiong moving for me.
Now – I just need to get stronger.
