I actually just moved to K.C. but i lifted at home and did BJJ when I lived in St. Louis. If you are looking into BJJ, Rodrigo Vaghi ( http://www.submissionjiujitsu.com/ ) Is the best around. I trained there for a year till I had to move. The people there are really cool, and range from white to brown belt. Only black belt there is Rodrigo himself, and he is a 3rd degree from helio (and rickson) himself. I graduamated in 1996. There are guys that train there that are in thier 50's so no biggie.

OP: I figured you where around 25-27. That is a good age to be drinking into the early morning with a bunch of young women. BTW - Where you born in the States or did you ever go to school here?

Cool, thanks - I check it out. On the plus side, I won't be 50 for quite a while.

NP it's over in fenton right off of I-44... don't know how far that is for you, but a quick jump on 270 to I44.. fairly priced also. 85$ gets you 3-4 classes a month. Anyways, nice lifting, i am jealous of your squats...

I am a Canadian. I went to uni in Canada, England, and Japan. If I could I'd do my PhD in America or England. But I have a full-ride here, so it's kind of hard to give that up and take on tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

Thanks - I'll check it out. It is not too far (I'm at Hanley and 64/40). - Also, good to see you are able to lift again.

As for the squats, when I was in high school and part of college, I wasn’t able to get jeans to fit over my calves and thighs that also fit my waist; I had to where khakis (this before the fattening of American required baggy jeans). When I finally decided to try to max out my squat, I found that my ghetto legs and ass are quite helpful.

Getting a full ride is essential. I am getting a full ride, a paid salary and medical insurance. Without compensation, the debt is too large to make up in future earnings, and I would be practicing law.

haha...I would have been an accountant or a teacher. Instead, I'm a "researcher"!

Actually, on the day I found out I got the scholarship I had spent the morning looking for schools to do a teaching degree. Quite quickly put that idea away though.

I do actually have a bit of a dilemma right now though, maybe you can comment. I have already been to Thailand twice for qualitative interviews. I have a lot of data from that, plus observations and assessment reports from the agencies I worked with. Now, I have a chance to return and do another round of interviews due to funding support coming from my school. The main reason I'd go again is to get more experience with field work, I have *enough* data, though technically I could always use a bit more.

However, my thesis is due at the end of October, my PhD proposal is due in December, I have a Japanese proficiency test in December, and a stats course to take. I can handle all that, but I'd like to get started sooner rather than later. And it'd be a bit of a scramble.

Do you feel the value of another 2-3 weeks of field work would be worth it? After this summer I won't have a chance to go abroad for field work for another year or more. Basically I'm weighing the choice between getting my stuff done in good time, versus getting more experience at research and field work. What say you?

OP:

If you feel you can take the field work and still get your other shit done, I would go. One of the only perks about graduate study is free working vacations. Since most of your fields work is done, it sounds like this trip would be light on work. I would use it to finish your research, do a little bit of other work and have a nice vacation (I would not, however, pitch the travel grant in such a way). It sounds like you are about to be extremely busy, and this might be your only chance to get away for a while. Plus, it never hurts to get more research, and you might find something that is helpful to your project.

Last year, I got to go to Spain for 5 days to give a 45 minute presentation. I plan on taking full advantage of our travel grants every time I can.
