Raby's Everything Log
My name is Jeremy Raby (if anyone cares) and I've been doing BJJ for about 4 months now. I boxed in high school for about 1.5 years 'till the club closed. I'm training in an MMA class/club that Oklahoma State University's Campus Recreation puts on, I'm a Freshman there. If anyone reads this, please feel free to offer any insight that you have, it'll be greatly appreciated. I'm starting this log to get feedback on my training, if anyone reads it; and so I can have one more physical "thing" to track my progress in BJJ, strength training, cardio, diet, and to excel in spite of my self. I hope to post every day, or at least 3 times/week. I would like to compete in a grappling tourney by May 2007. I'll most likely get beat very quickly, but it'll be a good learning experience.
11 April 2006
Went to my jiu jitsu/ muay thai class tonight. We didn't work on much b/c the main instructor (Doug) was cutting weight for a tourney in Chicago this Sat. Stand up drills (punch mitts) we do never really do much for me but provide a short workout. As for the ground stuff, we learned a sort of Butterfly Sweep from a standing Head and Elbow clinch where you step on uke's rear foot (the side you're gripping the elbow) and hook your instep in their lead thigh, then sit down to the side that you're gripping the elbow to sweep them over. You use your hook to finsh the sweep in the mount (or at least on top in control). Next we worked on a sacrifice throw that I can't remember the name of. Basically from the Head/Elbow clinch, you put your foot (the side you have a hold on the neck) on uke's thigh and try to sit as close to uke's feet as possible (kind of "swing" through his legs). When uke leans over you, with their head over yours, you kick your leg straight up and basically do a backward roll to mount. Pretty cool throws, but I wonder how well they work on a more advanced person. I might need more faith, since I'm not any good at takedowns. After that, the four of us that were practicing rolled. I rolled w/ Chris (the guy teaching) twice and got owned very quickly both times. First with a Biceps Cutter (I had no idea what happend, just that it hurt really bad), then with a type of Keylock, I guess, from knee mount where he twisted my right wrist backward with his arms figure-foured around my Biceps/Forearm. That's the best description I can offer. At first I thought he was trying an armbar and tried to pull out, aware that he could do the "Keylock" because I saw it in a book, but I didn't know how to defend either of them.I pretty much twisted my own arm and gave it to him, but maybe that was his setup (the armbar attempt) for the "keylock". I need to start rolling with more ppl, anybody willing, b'c I need to get more experience. I'm tired of getting tapped by guys b/c I haven't gotten my technique down enough to counter their overpowering me. Definately going to work on my strength, too! I figure that getting overpowered while I'm still using good technique will make be that much better when I do finally start to get stuff down and submitting ppl. I went jogging after class for a mile. Just starting doing cardio, I definately need a LOT more work. Sorry for the long post (probably won't be this long anymore).
