Thursday June 15, 2006

1 mile run on treadmill

4 x 12 pullups (these sucked, cause I had to compromise my form just to complete all the reps toward the end. Will have to work on more body weight exercises so that when I reach my goal of a lean 185, I will have the strength of a 200 + lb person)

2 x 20 pushups

2 x 100 crunches (laying flat on floor, feet in the air, knees straight)

Capoeira
light jog with footwork, jumping jacks, etc

step by step practice of ginga and kicks and low floor movements

Streching

Combinations

Ginga (work on rythym and perfecting the stance/form of the Ginga)

Partner Drills for Counter attacks

Roda (was supposed to be a "nice" game because of the upcoming Bautizado[to avoid injuries], but everyone's Test. Levels were maxed out today so we went for broke, good stuff, Lots of take downs, sweeps, counter kicks to the face... FUN!)

light stretch

that's all for today
Tommorro gonna hit the road for a "long" run
and probably will rest Saturday while watching videos, visuallizing, and maybe some real light step by step practice

You're absolutely right my friend. These begining log days have been very slack in the hand striking work, But this will be corrected Monday the day after the Bautizado.

Keeping a Log aint as easy as it looks...

Well folks, I'm back. Was recently visited by the King himself (he was in town visiting family and decided I needed some schooling in the sweet science. He was right!), and I have been inspired to log my trainings again.

the time has flown since my last post in this log. I have kept up with training in my absence from sherdog. Even though I have had to enlist the help of several trainers/friends/and schools to try and get the type of training and sparring I feel I need.

I am not going to lie... I am not a fan of logging my training LOL! I have a 2 year old daughter and my wife's 13 yr old sister to take care of, I work two jobs (library m-f 8-5 and at GNC nights and weekends), I am a partner for HOLLYWOOD MMA a new school my teacher, friend, and I are opening (which is a lot of damned work just to get the legalities finished), and as mentioned before I train "abroad": one main place for grappling, another for striking, and another for sparring... Needless to say, I am stretched pretty thin.
But I am making the choice to log based on advice from my good friend King K and because I feel it will help me be more honest with myself and to train smarter.

and so here we go:

Here I'd like to show some appreciation to the school that has helped me so much with my grappling ability, although as of late I have not been able to get to class very often at all, before this slump I had been training with them for a good while and these guys are awesome: http://www.marcelogarciasofla.com/
the actual school has been thru some name changes but the core people that made it great for me are still there: the owner mike, BJJ instructors Leo, John, Josh, and Mark, Judo instructor Jimmy, kickboxing instructor Gary and of course a really good group of students there too.

And now that they hooked up with Marcelo Garcia (leo and john have trained with him quite a bit and he has brought a couple seminars to the school in the past) it's even better. In fact Marcelo just recently taught at the place and it was great. Can't say enough good things about this school.

let's get up to speed starting with King's arrival

Tuesday, December 18th
Main goal for this day: relax and stretch be ready to spar this guy in miami and then pick up Liu from the Airport.

No run this morning
at noon for my lunch break I did some really good strechting (I had a plan to try a lot of kicks on my opponent this nights sparring)

Sparring with these guys is always like a alley fight. Don't get me wrong here they are great guys and their intentions truly are to let us all get better thru training and sparring together. It's just the travel there, it's always at night (only time we are all off from work), the sparring area is on the second floor in a small room stuffed with heavy bags, the lighting is awful, our greetings are short, short warmup and then we spar my teacher (Mestre Cleber) in my corner and the other guy with his crew in his.
3) 5 min rounds
1st round started good, I was too tentative but was snapping off jabs that made him look like a bobble head. But he was firing back (he fought very pressure like) trying to overwhelm me with speed and power in bursts of combos and very strong leg kicks. I briefly felt like I was using angles well and saw him lose balance and lose the ability to counter me when I used footwork with my combinations that put me on the outside of his aim, but in the flurry of cliches and pushing and wild haymakers I got into autopunch mode and all that went out the window LOL. eventually we clinched again and I was working knees when they shouted 30 seconds and the "ref" came to break up and restart befor the end of round one. And then I got rocked, the guy in his fury swung at me as they were breaking us apart... I actually thought there was no foul and was scolding myself for getting caught; which actually pushed me in the second round.
2nd round was still a little dizzy but I remembered I had two legs and that I wanted to use them. this helped confuse the guy a bit, I imagine he felt I was a different guy in there. from bell to bell of round two I was the pressure guy and it worked well for me. He was still very crafty and quick still trying leg kicks and even some side kicks to the body when he could get away enough, and his attempts to get inside and clinch had me somewhat worried in hindsight but I was able to pull off knees from there and push away/sprawl well. and I think the kicks to his midsection had a lot to do with it. His cardio was depleting bad. I stand in an orthodox stance but my front leg(left) is nasty and I threw it at the liver over and over. this round felt really long and at one point he wanted a break because he was gassed.
3rd round he went for broke, and I was able to side step and fire more kicks to the body and eventually at the head which had him backpeddaling a bit and my teacher was yelling to throw six punches! because he was tired, eventually he gave in to his cardio problems...
overall I am very proud of this sparring session because of all the help and training from my Teacher, and friends like Liu and Travis really paid off, I had good cardio and a lot more comfort moving around swithching game plans etc. My sparring partner was really into it too and I know we will sparr again and he will be even better because of this, especially with improved cardio.
Everyone notice my improvements over the months.
After Sparring I trained some more with these guys and had a great workout.

Went to Get Liu at Airport. It was great to see my friend after so long. showed him to My new school: www.hollywoodmma.net before dropping him off at his family's place. Gonna train some boxing with him a few times during his visit.
