My amateur MMA log

Alright, I want to start getting down a log to push myself for next days workouts and to keep me honest about my training.

I had a pretty light day in training. First hour of standup work was pretty weak and was just technique refinement. I then sparred with my instructor for 3 or 4 rounds standup. After that I rolled four 40 minutes with some better grapplers.

After the first hour I sparred 4 rounds of standup with my instructor. Felt pretty out of my league. Really brought to light that I:
Need to fight more strategically
Work more angles and getting inside
Attacking the body
How to deal with his push kicks and checks

From my rolling session I need to primarily work on:
Passing a good open guard
Sidemount and back escapes
Armbars from guard
Not staying so loose with transitioning

Improvements:
Cardio is improving alot
Hands moving more in bunches. A tad ineffective punches, but better than just seldomly following my jab with a halfassed cross.

Tomorrow I'm always going to start rolling sidemounted or with my back taken. Standup I'm going to work more on slipping punches and being more selective with my leg kicks.

Also, everyday I need to spend a half hour out of the gym to do the following (and make a playlist on itunes to play while doing):
6 minutes of general stretching
9 minutes of straight jump rope
6 minutes of straight ab work
9 minutes of shadow boxing
I'll devote this time to 5:00-5:30 mon, wensday, saturday, sunday and 12:30-1 tuesday and thursday.

Alright, training today wasn't that great. I felt like shit going in so I need to wake up earlier on days I train out in the morning. We did a rough bag circuit (rough because how shitty I felt,) then did three rounds of boxing followed by three rounds of us being silly and trying to spar with kicks only. After that hour we worked some sidemount drills and took it easy for a half hour before the gym had to close up early. Oh well, it was just an off day.

Improvements:
I worked angles a bit was fighting a bit more strategically successfully.
Slipping punches was better

Key things to work be working on next practice:
Creating angles and attacking strategically
Clean, fast shots and rolling kneebars
Escaping sidemount and backmount

Pretty good day of training today. The first hour we did some good cardio, running for about 15 minutes after doing maybe 5-10 minutes of piggy backing someone. Then we worked some combos then went on to some clinch work. Then we sparred three or four rounds. Working angles worked on some of the weaker people, but against a good boxer I went with it wasnt having any of that. He was just punching too fast for me to react. Later we worked on the same sidemount drills for abou 15-20 minutes then I rolled for about 30-40 minutes. I didn't work from under sidemount or being backmounted because I was rolling with much, much better people who I just wanted to have a whole match with. I gotta be more disciplined with that.

Improvements:
Um, I guess the spinning heel kicks sorta worked.

Key things to work be working on next practice:
Creating angles and attacking strategically
Clean, fast shots and rolling kneebars
Escaping sidemount and backmount
And I need to keep my fucking hands up.

I'm not going to get to work out tomorrow and I'm pissed about that.

So yesterday I had a real good day of training. Nothing but sparring. I warmed up by rolling with a less skilled person and was just working submissions and helping him abit. I realized that my hip movement isn't THAT bad. After that I sparred 3 rounds with another newer guy. He was trying to hit pretty hard so I was just working my defence and punching intelligently. However, I couldn't really punch him much without getting punched myself and was just off against him. After that I did more standup with a pro fighter who always likes to beat my ass; I was still a bit off and got messed up but am seeing progress when sparring with him. After that I rolled once with a pretty big guy with not that much skill.

After all that my grappling instructor showed us some techniques. The first he showed were some anaconda choke techniques. One of which is that when you have someone against the ropes/cage and have the front headlock, try to bend them down to their knees so they lose all power, then from there you can either work the anaconda or let go and grab both legs for the takedown. Another thing he showed us was a weight/pressure thing which is good for taking the wind out of you. From like a scarf hold position, you put your hips right at the bottom of their rib cage and have the underhook on the oppsite side. Right there it sucks the wind from you but you can pull the opposite underhooked side to sort of compact them and make it even more effective.

After that I did 3 rounds with a good amatuer fighter who's making his pro debut next month. He's roughly my height with about 10 pounds on me so he's the closest to me in the gym. I can really note my progress against him. I did really good against him standup. My front roundhouses and uppercuts really shined. I did take alot of body shots from him though and they started taking a toll.

After that me and him got in the ring and did some two rounds of hard MMA. I did pretty good and was good about being aggressive and not having sloppy technique. I mostly would punch him into a corner or ropes and would clinch and work knees. I went for a rolling kneebar which i almost hit but couldn't quite get it, then I went to a heel hook which he got out of and we both stood back up. The same thing happened again with m getting him in a corner and working the clinch and when I was losing that war I went for another rolling kneebar. This one was I almost got. It got better and better and by the time I had it completely extended and thought he was going to tap when the bell went off. I have good cardio and never get tired when kick boxing or rolling, but I was dead tired for the next round and that was very discouraging. Next round comes and I do some lazy standup since I'm dead tired and well later on when I'm against the ropes he lands a killer body shot right to the solar plexus. It was over from that .

Overall things I thought I did well with and saw improvement were:
I could consistently hit the rolling kneebar but couldn't completely finish
Inside kicks and left leg roundhouses
My uppercuts worked when I saw guys bobbing

Things I need to work on and focus on:
Clean, fast shots and rolling kneebars
Escaping sidemount and backmount
Creating offensive standup attacks. I don't like getting punched when I'm jabbing.
Using less energy in the clinch and being more calm when doing MMA.
