Wed Aug 15
DL today- did 325 5 times before hands gave out, dropped it to 285, got 7 before hands give out, drop to 200 and did 14 before hands gave out, then held one end of the bar for time, about 5 reps each hand.
Rested for about 15 min and went back, DLing 200 10 times, mainly for my hands, which were at failure...
Stretch after, and eat (chicken)
Regarding my diet, I've read here http://www.weightlossforall.com/protein-peas.htm that beans/peas protein is an incomplete one, so I've dropped to one can per day of peas or beans, and taken up the protein with one or two chicken breasts, roasted.
+ My lower back doesn't hurt after DL anymore.
- My hands are too weak. (a bit of a blow, since I'd always thought if any part of me could be remotely called strong, it was my hands)
Please, any criticism/advice etc., is welcomed. Thanks.

Hunto, it's you, me, and Flak bro. I'm 42.
I propose we start some kind of e-club.
We'd need a name though...
The Weezers and Geezers e-warriors, something like that.
Welcome aboard. The S & P forum rocks, and has completely changed my lifting for the better. Let me put it this way: a year ago I was doing deadlifts with 20 lb dumbells. Seriously.
Last week I pulled 350 lbs.
You're in the right place amigo.

I don't care what we call it, as long as our logo has a happy, silver-haired couple riding a tandem bike.

Nice to meetcha BB, and you too Flak.
I'm thinking about a name for our sub-club---
When I read the "Forbidden Topics" sticky, I knew I'd found a comfy 'Net spot. It isn't a BB site- and this may sound ignorant, but up till now the only weight exercises I knew were BB-type isolation stuff, and wasn't aware of other forms of lifting. Sure I knew about powerlifters, but I never thought about DL as an exercise for me till I started reading this forum.
My wife is starting to do some exercise after seeing me at it a bit and she was asking me about weights for 'toning'. I popped up Sherdog and showed her Carnals Treatise in the FAQs. She had thought that 30 reps with 5 pounds was good because she could 'feel the burn'. After reading Carnal's work, and Urban's, she added a bit of weight to her dumbells and (with me encouraging her the whole time) actually lifted some weight. She kept saying 'I can't do this' as she added 5 or 10 pounds to her bars, only to find that she could do it after all. Instead of 20 reps, she was getting 4 or 5. And of course her question was 'Can I get any gains doing so few reps with this weight'? And after reading Carnals Treatise her questions were answered.
Getting my wife into exercising (she rides the stationary bike as well) is as important to me as doing it myself. I can only help to motivate her. But for good information, myth-busting info, I point her to this site. So thanks to all the guys that wrote the stickies, and to all the guys in here that contribute.

Fri Aug 17-
Last night I did BP, curls, and one-hand dumbell shoulder press. Still limited on BP (225) due to the machine, although I plan to use sawhorses and an old bench and get off the machine. However since I'm still stuck on it, I'm doing the 225 for 20, 30 reps at a time. (I tried to add more weight to the machine's stack, with barbells on top of the plates, but the machine was bending and it isn't safe and that was only 40 extra pounds so that idea is out.)
Curls I still do mainly because it's the triceps antagonist. If it weren't for this, I wouldn't do curls at all. Just a couple sets of 5 or 6 (45lbs barbell) and I'm done with that.
And, after messing up a rotator cuff hitting the heavy bag back in January, and doing the rehab exercises for it (SITS muscles, etc) last night I was able for the first time in 8 months to OHP a dumbell with my left hand. Only 45lbs, but up till now, the joint hurt too bad to do any push exercises with my left shoulder. Now it seems, if I build back careful, I can resume that exercise, which I have missed doing. (OHP with dumbells and barbell.)
Criticisms, comments welcome.

Grip may not be as bad as I thought, though it definitely needs work. I was reading, somewhere, it may have been a link from here, about DL'ing with both hands over the bar, as opposed to one over/one under (pronated/supinated). The article said, "You may find you can only do 60-70% of normal DL gripping it this way but it will etc etc...." That's how I have been holding it. So I stopped there and thought, what if I hold it one over and one under? I hadn't liked the idea of asymmetric exercise, and in one of the faqs I remember reading that the writer said he preferred to hold it with both hands over the bar, so that's how I've been doing it. I read elsewhere about switching hands for sup/pronated, and that the asymmetry causes no problems, and so I tried it.
The 320 went up no problem, but it didn't want to roll out of my fingers like it did when both were over the bar. In no way does this mean I don't have to work my grip, I do, but maybe I'm not as decrepit as I first felt when I couldn't hold the 320.
Did I mention I like doing deadlifts??

I'm trying to get me wife into working out too. She smokes and hates exercise. This is going to be a long process for me and her, but we're working on it. She was raised by a single mom who never exposed her to ANY exercise at all.
I also found the same "solution" to my dead lift: the over under grip solved my immediate gripping problems.
Me thinks dead lifts are awesome also...

Sat night-
Would have liked to wait till Mon or so to DL again, but I felt good, nothing hurt, and I really wanted to try the over/under grip. Got 11 reps with 325, no grip problems. Ass hurts, and lats, otherwise feel pretty good.
Will try to wait till at least Wed or so before doing any more weights, I have to fight the urge to overtrain.
Time to go eat.
