Good luck with Shooto too
actually the notion that squats work your legs is not entirely true. squats recruit the body as a unit, they are intense on your hamstrings but what makes them a good lift is that they work the whole body, which in turn strengthens the whole body

Yeah, I just used to do crazy numbers of bw exercises thinking I'd be ok. It's just when I hit the iron that I realised I'm actually weak!
My numbers are growing quickly tho. 2 weeks ago a 180lbs DL seemed heavy and before yesterday I deadlifted 210 and it felt easy.
And I feel that is already paying off in training. Last night at bjj I tapped this guy I used to have endless battles with in the past. And it was my first time in a gi in months. Basically I muscled my way to the sub.
Now I feel I've just been missing out on a very basic aspect of my training for way too long.
Anyway, time to go back to the gym!

DAY3:

-Morning: recovery workout. Jogging, shadow, stretching etc.
-Evening: Paraestra Tokyo. Lots of grappling. Some light striking. 2x6min MMA.

First half of the week gone. Now I have 3 challenges left in the next 3 days.
1-Sleep!
I can never sleep on wednesday nights and that really messes up the remainder of my week. I got some sleeping aid for today tho. Let's see if it helps.

2-Get into Deep Gym.
Paraestra Shibuya is closed this week so friday's training has been moved to Deep. Now, a couple of guys there have beef with me so I dunno if I'll be allowed in. I guess I'll just have to give it a try.

3-Kick this guy's ass on saturday: Fight Finder - Issei Tamura's Mixed Martial Arts Statistics
I rolled with him just before my last fight and he was allover me. Way less experienced, smaller and he still took me to school. It was a shockingly humbling experience. I HAVE to tap this dude no matter what it's gona take!!!

DAY4:
-Squat workout.
Squats up to 5 reps at 198lbs (failed on 4th rep)
-Bench up to 5 reps at 160lbs (failed on 4th rep)
-BOR 4x5@155lbs
-BB Rollouts 3x5 (failed on last)

Bad training today. I improved on squats and bench but reached failure not once, not twice but 3 times!
Also for some reason I thought I could finish my last set of bench without a spotter. Needles to say I got stuck under the bar and one of the gym assistants had to come and rescue me.
And I also pinched my thumb when 2 plates I was carring slipped. I start to think I should add myself to the "idiot in the gym" thread.
Anyway, I didn't sleep last night again so I didn't feel like pushing myself to do bjj today. May do some on saturday morning.

DAY5:
-Afternoon: Deep Gym. 5x5 min grappling.
Had no problem training in Deep today. I even rolled with Aoki and he didn't just try to injure me. Had some good training.

-Evening: Paraestra Tokyo. Light boxing & grappling.
A bit low tonight. There was no one to really train with. I just played about all evening.

DAY 6:

-Morning: 35 min 90% run + 2 sprints (400 meter? I should check this).

-Evening: Crazy Bees. 4x5min boxing. 5x5 min grappling.

Really good end to a very good week.
My legs felt really strong this morning. From squats maybe? I think so. Plus it took me a whole 10 min of running and a 400m sprint to get my HR to target. Felt pretty good.
Training at CB was good too. I'm learning how to not always go 100% and that seems to be paying off.
Rolled with Issei. Hell I put him on his back for a whole 3 mins. Was a bit tentative so I didn't take the chance to pass guard.
Eventually I losened up my grip a bit and he took the chance to reverse me and yes he did pass my fu**ing guard. Hell I can't even do a rubber guard on him as he simply "jumps" over it! Kicking this guy's ass is becoming my obsession.

I would make sleep your priority. I would sleep at least 8 hours every night. This is what is likely in a large way responsible for your overtraining. Remember that in the gym you get weaker. You get stronger in the kitchen eating and in the bed sleeping. This is what's called a supercompensation period.

I would also not go above 3 reps on deadlifts and I would lift 1 rep at a time. Reset the bar on the ground, regrip and lift after every rep.

Generally try to hit just last good rep you can muster without going to failure. Generally you should ahve a good idea if you're going to be able to make the rep or not so missing reps should be a rare occassion.

I find getting good sleep is often a problem. I may still have my nerves running from a late session, may have dinner too late, may be to hot, too sore and bed too hard etc. Or maybe I'll simply have to wake up 4-5 times to go to the toilet. I really need to work on this.

I do 5 "single" reps on every set of DL's. Maybe I should try 3. But I'm kind of afraid my DL will grow way more than my squat. But that's probably because I need more work on my squat really.
Btw will try to post some vids for a form-check. It's entirely possible that I can't squat because I suck technique-wise.
And as far as failing goes, no man I had no idea. I'm a gnub and it was the first time I failed. Hopefully I won't repeat the mistake too often before I learn from it.

Anyway, I've spent the last few days reading graedy's log. Didn't post yet 'cause I'm only half way through.
Man that guy is a beast! With all the shit he went through he still kicks my ass in every aspect of training. And I'm a fu**ing pro fighter?!!!
I feel like I had somehow accepted some very limited goal in my life. What the hell! It's about time I get my head out of the sand!

Week3 DAY1:

Morning:
3x10 OHS (only bar)
1x20 Squat 155lbs (this wasn't too bad, should be no problem doing it with 165 next time)
4x5 BOR up to 180lbs
4x5 Bench 155lbs
3x5min bagwork.

Was feeling very much in a bad mood today. Plus the wife came to the gym with me and I had to try show her some stuff - all whie listening to all the whining of how this is too heavy and that she doesn't like and the other is too embarassing and so on.
So I didn't feel like going to Paraestra tonight but when I did I found, surprise surprise, Kenichiro Togashi! And he even asked me to do some stand-up together. That just made my day. So my training tonight:
-3x3min light stand-up spar.
-2x3min put a serious beatdown on Togashi (after this he basically hid himself but I cought him later on for 1 last light round)
-2x6min grapple

Really short workout but at least I had the satisfaction to beat someone up.
Tomorrow I'm thinking Crazy Bees. Let's see how I feel.

Hey dude.
Good luck on your fight.

I suggest from today, before bed every night, knock out 200 push-ups.
I do them in 4 sets of 50.
